Notes for THOMASNATHANIEL E.EDWARDS: HISTORY OF THE EDWARDS FAMILY
The Edwards' of Northampton came from Wales. Their ancestral home, called "Edwards Hall" was in Glen Morganshire (Glamogan) near Cardiff. It was built some time around 1050-1100 in the time of William the Conquerer and came into the Edwards family later by marriage into the family of Queen Elizabeth. They occupied it for generations and it was finally abandoned in the early 1700s, Nothing but a pile of rubble now remains to mark its location in this rouorh, hilly, rocky land. There is no doubt that members of this Welsh family came to America in different generations, at different times. It would be impossible to trace them successfully as some came directly, some through England, some possibly through Scotland. There is a marked similarity of names in the Edwards families who came to Virginia in the 1600s and 1700s, settling in Isle of Wight, Surry and Albemarle and those coming later to Northampton. We will not try to verify the relationship between them. Many historians have traced these families. Several have used as their earliest ancestor the very same Richard Edwards who appears in our family papers as the head of our family. Where our records originated I do not know. Those used in this book are from our family's files which we have accepted for just what they are - unverified family records - but which they believed to be true and handed down for generations. Richard5 received an MA degree in 1547 <at Oxford, in the Cartus Christi College. He was both a musician and composer. No traces of his compositions are known and we can only guess their quality by the fact that history records their existence.-Edwards of Northampton> He was also a scholar and poet. His occupation is listed as an Anglican minister in the Church of England.
He first married to Margaret Babb5 on April 22, 1560, in Parish of North Petherton, England. She had a son William6, born and baptist November 09, 1561 in North Petherton, Somerset, England.
Married a second time abt. 1562, in England, to Helene Griffith5 (born Abt. 1534 in England). Richard5, Sr. died October 31, 1567, in Edwards Hall, Glamorgan, Near Cardiff, South Wales. Helene5 died Aft. 1567 in England. John6 married Ellenor Pursloe6 on October 23 1586 in St. Nicholas Church, London, England. JOHN'S6 occupation was that of a merchant of London. Gwyn6 died about 1603. John6 died December 16 1604 in St. Nicholas Parish, London, England.

Thomas10 came to New Amsterdam, NY in 1640:
On Nov.1642, William Kieft, then, Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam, made an original grant to Thomas Hael. Land in New Netherland, later known as New York, by the Dutch West Indies Company. In 1660, Thomas9, referred to as The Old Ship Master, married Elizabeth, only daughter of Thomas Hael/Hall and Mary Droery. They were married in Rird-y-Gorf, Wales/New Amsterdam, NY, daughter of Thomas
When the British took over these Dutch colonies, Thomas9 Edwards had his grant confirmed by the royal governor. Some maps designate the property of Thomas Hael as being in the name of Thomas Edwards as does the confirmation of Governor Lovelace specifically confirming this title to Edwards in 1673. There has never been any conveyance of title to anyone else. On 11-6-1674, title to Hael's original grant, Hael having died in 1669, was confirmed to Thomas9 husband of Elizabeth, by Edward Andros, Colonial Governor of New York.
Apparently, Thomas9 was a man of considerable means and very much involved in real estate operations. Records indicate that he cleared land, built houses, and promoted a sales campaign very much as is done today. (BOOK, "Andrew Edwards, Rev. Sol." by Margaret Scruggs Sommerfield, 1969, page 3)
