Note: (Camille Ammerman)
According to Charold O. Hill's article, David Coleman Hill, Sr. came from Germany. On the 1870 and 1880 census reports, David's place of birth is recorded as Virginia, and on the 1880 census his parents were reported as having been born in Virginia. [I trust the census reports.]

ENTRY from RITCHIE COUNTY DEATHS
(researched by look-up volunteer, Jean W. Moore, 2/27/2002]

Pribble Cemetery
David Hill
No Dates CSA C. W.

This is very interesting and a little puzzling. Jean Moore of Ritchie Co. informed me that the CSA C. W. on this entry indicates "Confederate States of America, Civil War." If this "DAVID HILL" fought in the Civil War, he would have been over forty yrs. old at the time. Yet, I suppose it may have happened.

His son, David Jr., would have been more in line agewise (abt. 28 at the beginning of the war) , but he did not die in Ritchie Co. He died in Wood Co., according to previous research.

Cousin Jerry L. Thornton took a genealogy survey trip during the summer of 2002. He was given by a Mr. Bert Fouty the phone number for Mrs. Loraine Metz who wrote a history of Ritchie County entitled "They Came Here." During the ensuing phone conversation, Mrs. Metz verified that David Coleman Hill, Sr. had indeed fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. She also verified that David C. Hill and his wife, Mary Margaret Holmes Hill, had separated.

In April, 2003, I received an email from Marilyn Simms, descendent of Mary Margret Holmes and her first husband, Robert Simms. She verified that David Hill, Sr. is buried in the Pribble Cemetery.

Includes NotesMarriage Notes for David Coleman Hill, Sr. and Mary Margaret Holmes:
In an email in April 2003, Marilyn Simms, descendent of Robert Simms and Mary Margaret Holmes, cites that David C. Hill and Mary were married in Botetourt Co., VA in 1847 when Mary's son James (from her first marriage) was about six years old. She also reports that the Hill family came to the Ritchie/Pleasants County area in about 1864 and lived at Horseneck and Pullman. She verifies that David fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. His son, James Simms, fought for the Confederacy, also.

1870 Census, Ritchie Co. - David and Mary Hill lived in Ritchie WV, Grant District.
1880 Census, Ritchie Co. - David Hill (54) was a boarder in the household of Hugh Pribble.
Mary Hill (56] lived in Wirt Co. WV, Clay District.

David and Mary are not found in the 1850 and 1860 Census reports in Wood, Ritchie, or Wirt Counties.
This may indicate that they did not come to Ritchie Co., until after 1860.
They evidently separated sometime between 1870 and 1880. David went to live as a boarder in the home of his daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, Hugh Pribble.
