My grandmother was inspired to write down memories from her childhood after the Magoffin County Historical Society decided to begin researching and recording the family trees of many of our older families. Our family line includes many names that have lived in Magoffin and Floyd Counties for generations, including Patrick, Arnett, Salyer, and Caudill.

Because I loved to write, my grandmother entrusted me with her written memories, although I was barely 13. I put the stories away and didn't look at them again until my grandfather nearly 10 years later. It was only then that I realized what a treasure trove I had.

My grandmother had written what she remembered, without being concerned about creating a cohesive story line. I would have to do a lot of research to properly fill in the details. Luckily, I was in college at the time and had access to our school's resources. Further, the internet was just beginning to become popular. Every year, more and more verifiable information was becoming available.

As I began to share with my relatives what I was doing, they too became interested. Suddenly, we were sharing pictures and memories of our family, and I was recording every one. It is this information that I would like to share.
