Notes for ROBERT CARROLL
DE KAM:
Individual: de Kam, Robert Social Security #: 366-22-9806 Issued in: Michigan
Birth date: Dec 25, 1924 Death date: Jan 1986 Residence code: Daytona Beach, Florida ZIP Code of last known residence: 32016 As of April 1997, this ZIP Code was not in use by the U.S. Postal Service. The following primary location may have once been associated with this ZIP Code or may be in the same general geographic region of the U.S. It is also possible that the Social Security Administration had the wrong ZIP Code listed .
Robert, like his Dad, was also a "Runaway Child" Being dissatisfied with his home life, Bob left home in Davenport, Iowa in 1939 and went back to Battle Creek, Michigan where he lived with "Uncle Richard", as we called him, but no relation to us. Having missed out on going to school during the young years of his life due to traveling on the road with his parents, Bob, like his brothers and sisters was 2 years behind age-wise for being in the proper grade. This was not due to failing grades, but because we had no proof that we ever attended 1st or 2nd grades, and therefore was not allowed to enter these higher grades. All of us lied our ages so as not to look "Dumb" to the other children in our classes. His mother taught us our schooling from 10th grade school books that she had from her days in school. Robert, and Richard, his brother could both read and do the home work of a tenth grader at 8, 9, and 10 years old. Robert was just not allowed to enter the grade he was qualified for, as he had to have a diploma saying he went through 2nd and 3rd grades, which he didn't have.
Due to the schooling dilemma, Robert was 18 years old in the Eleventh Grade when because of WWll, he was drafted out of High School on April 9, 1943 nine months shy of his 19th birthday. He served his boot camp at Camp Callen, California and destined to be in the infantry. But because of his exceptional abilities in learning he was chosen to go to special training classes that the Army was badly in need of trained personel in Electronics and other highly skilled training catagories they needed to help win the war. He was transferred to Chicago, Illinois and went to the Coyne Electrical school that the Army had taken over to train skilled personel. He was stationed here for over a year learning Electronics, both maintainance and repair. After graduation he was sent to Germany where he was an Anti Aircraft specialist maintaining the Anti Aircraft Guns and other electronic equipment. Bob was also skilled in Auto repair, where he took a class in Auto mechanics in high school, but not used while in military service. Because of this training at Coyne Electrical, he could also repair radio Equipment. And although television was not out as yet, he had the basics to repair television, which he done for a brief period in civilian life afterwards in Thompsonville CN. He had his own repair shop.
Robert was wounded in Germany while riding in the back seat of a half-track vehicle. His Army group had already captured the town and was just passing through, so to speak, when a young German boy, estimated to be about 12 years old tossed a molten hand-grenade into the vehicle. As it exploded, it shot molten lead plus the shell fragments throughout the half-track. Bob was lucky he was in the back seat with another soldier, as the two riding in front were killed instantly, while he and the other soldier were badly wounded. The other soldier in the rear died also about 3 months later. Bob, being the only true survivor of the mishap. The intense heat of the molten lead that was mostly directed to his right hand caused him to stick his hand down between his legs and try to scrape the lead from his hand. This resulted in his removing the flesh down to the bone. He also recieved multiple fragments of steel throughout most of his right side, as the grenade came through the passenger side that he was sitting in. Years later these fragments were still working their way to the outer skin surfaces and were removed then. This also resulted in several skin grafts where skin tissue was removed from his inner thighs.
Robert received the Purple Heart Decoration, The European Campaign Medal, with two oak leaf clusters, Two other medals and the World War Two Victory Medal. He received a medical discharge on October 8, 1945. Robert went to Battle Creek High School and took the test for his senior graduation and passed, therefore becoming a High School Graduate. In Battle Creek, Michigan he first worked for Consumers Power Co. Although qualified for a position in higher electrical skills, he had to start out as a meter reader, as was the basic requirements for all new employees. Of course, if you knew Bob, this was just not his cup of tea.
He left home again venturing to Great Lakes Naval Base and joined the Navy where he lied his previous Military record of the injuries he had so he could enlist. By doing this, he lost his 40 percent disability pay he was recieving from the Army.
After boot training, he was sent to New London, Conn to be in the Submarine Service. After one year, he became an Electricians mate 3rd Class, and in order to become this, one had to know all the basic workings of the electrical system on board the Submarine. He learned Sonar and Radio repair here also. He was stationed at Quantanamo Bay at the US Naval Sub Base on the Eastern end of Cuba. Although his discharge from the Navy was honorable, he did not volunteer to resign. The Government caught up to him from his previous service record through fingerprints and such methods and he had to be mustered out.
Robert met Constance Angelica here in Connecticut and they married. He moved to Thompsonville, where she lived and he eventually went to work for Hamilton Standard Aircraft, which was the parent Company of Pratt Whitney Aircraft Engines. Because of never receiving a College education as an Electronics Engineer, he could not be on the pay roll as an Electronics Engineer. He was more qualified than most all of the Engineers and was called on ( too numerous to mention) times to help solve the problems they were having. Hamilton Standard had a huge lay-off, and Bob was caught in it. While waiting to be called back to work, he started develping and building an Electric Pedal Steel guitar in his basement at home. Bob had always been an avid music lover and played several instruments. He teamed up with Jim Gurley to form and manufacture the "DEKLEY ELECTRIC STEEL GUITAR COMPANY". Robert had to leave the business because of a heart problem, but told if he was not to be too active he would live forever. They also started up a tape recording Co. called "REEL DREAMS" recording studio.
Robert was in a country band for many years. He wrote several songs, both words and music and had 3 of them recorded by a Japanese Country group. Robert died on January 17, 1986 in Daytona Beach, Florida. The death certificate shows Port Orange, Volusia Co. Florida. He was cremated and was interred at Arlington National Cemetary in Virginia with full Military Honors. His remains are located on Patton Way, near MacArthur Circle.

THOMAS BRANDON DE KAM, JR.:
Peter was born at 33 Irving St. in Battle Creek, Michigan. The street name was later changed to Ivanhoe St. since then for some reason. Believed to be the only de Kam child of Peter and Ruth who was born in a hospital. He was born in Nichols Hospital on Van Buren St, which is now the unemployment Center at the corner of Carlisle St.
After his parents were divorced, Peter went to Thompsonville, Conn. to live with Brother Bob. He was only 16 years old at the time. Pete served in the US Army and was station in Germany during the Korean War. It was there that he met, and married Beatrice Gati, who is a first cousin to Constance Angelica who married older brother Robert. Most of the time he worked as a machinist, and later he helped build the Dekley Pedal Steel Guitar that brother Bob, Connie, and Jim Gurley owned.

I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways.
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun.
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.
Do not stand at my grave and cry, I did not die.
