Descendants of William Younger

Generation No. 7

11. THOMAS W.7 YOUNGER (THOMAS JAMES6, JAMES5, ALEXANDER4, THOMAS3, ALEXANDER2, WILLIAM1) (Source: Ancestry.com / TN Census / AR Census / TN Marriages.) was born 1791 in Chatham County, North Carolina, and died Abt. 1862 in Tomahawk Township, Searcy County, Arkansas. He married (1) RACHEL (?) HENDRICKS February 10, 1811 in Wilkes County. He married (2) ELLENDORE (ELLEN) LONDON 1830 in Maury County, Tennessee, daughter of JOHN LONDON. She was born Bet. 1804 - 1805 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina, and died 1880 in Marion County, Arkansas.

Notes for T
HOMAS W. YOUNGER:
Nickname: "Tomahawk Thomas" (given to him by researchers)

Information obtained from "Boone County Historian" - Vol. XII - No. 1 - 1989:

"They lived in TN and KY and migrated from TN to the Tomahawk Community of Searcy County, Arkansas, in 1854. It is not known when this Thomas left Chatham County, NC, but possibly with a wagon train of several Younger families including father Thomas Sr. about 1813, and settled in Williamson and Maury Counties. At sometime, he resided in KY, where some of his children were born and then in Knox County, TN. At the time he came into Arkansas, another group of Youngers left Williamson and Maury Counties and settled at Stockton in Cedar County, MO. Mother Mary Nall Younger died at 96 and is buried at Stockton, MO.

"Son Thomas (Tomahawk Thomas, as he is called by Younger researchers) on arriving in northwest Arkansas, camped first on the prairie near the old Sharpensteen place (Big Pond, Boone County, Marshall Prairie near Western Grove? Magness Place?) before settling tin Tomahawk Community near St. Joe, AR in Searcy County.

"Thomas built and operated water mills and several mills in the Tomahawk area are attributed to him. He was also a Christian preacher and "abolishonist" lecturer. Near the outbreak of the Civil War, he died leaving his widow and several children. Her home was destroyed by raiders claiming to be Confederates and Confederate sympathizers because she was allegedly harboring a Union sympathizer, "an old man named Baker."

"Four sons of Thomas and Ellen, John London, Alexander, Willis Parks, and Thomas joined the Union army.

"Some of this family is buried in Osborne Cemetery, others are in Pea Ridge Cemetery near Bruno in Marion County and Anderson Flat Cemetery, also in Marion County, and it is thought, also in Stone Cemetery in Searcy County.

"Tomahawk Thomas' family is found in Hopkins County, Kentucky, in 1840 and Hickman County, Tennessee in 1850, and in Searcy County, Arkansas, in 1860. (Karen's note: They are listed in Giles Co. TN 1850 census. See note below.)

"Thomas and son Alexander and Spencer Adams were members of the Peace Society according to the testimony of Peter Tyler (pgs. 94-96 Arkansas Historical Quarterly).

"Known descendants to the seventh generation from "Tomahawk" Thomas still reside in Arkansas, with many of them still in Boone, Marion, Carroll and Searcy Counties. Others are scattered over the country from east to west and north to south."

Note:      Information received from an internet source indicates that James Younger was the son of Thomas Younger, born 1791 and "unknown" Hendricks -- and was Alexander Younger's older half brother.

Note:      Thomas & Ellen are in the Giles Co. TN 1850 census. You can get this info from USGenWeb, Giles Co. TN Genealogy Census page 345. It lists Thomas & Ellen with five of their children. The three younger children are listed in the home of James Younger on page 345. Those children being Jane, John L., and Clark. Perhaps at the time there was a family illness and James and Margaret were keeping the children for Thomas and Ellen.

Note:       On Ancestry.com, Thomas is referred to as Thomas (Tomahawk) Younger -- probably because he lived in Tomahawk Township, Searcy County, Arkansas.

Note:       Notes from Hollis Stanford show Thomas' birthplace as Chatham, North Carolina.

Note:      Shown on the 1820 Franklin County TN Census.
