* The William Clarkson Family of South Carolina*

Updated June 22, 2005

William Clarkson was born in Whitby, Yorkshire, England in 1760, the son of John and Mary (Loocock) Clarkson. At the age of 13 years old, he left England to live with his Aunt Mary and Uncle Aaron Loocock in Charleston, SC, a wealthy businessman living at 31 Tradd St. Because the Loocock's were childless, Uncle Aaron felt it important to groom and teach his heir his business pursuits. He established very profitable Mercantile businesses, as well as profitable investments in land throughout SC. He eventually loaned his nephew "Will" 2,000 pounds to purchase a wharf on the Cooper River in Charleston, SC to start a rice merchant factoring business. Will's success and respect as a business man made it possible for him to purchase several plantations that eventually became the base for his son's good fortunes.
