The Armand H. Demerses of Rhode Island

Updated November 22, 2002

Although I am presently seeking early information for both sides of my family, I will only concern myself here with the Demers line.

1) My father was Armand H. Demers, Sr. - born in Woonsocket, RI June 20, 1908 and died in Providence, RI, July 26, 1993.
2) His father was Telesphore Demers - born June 22, 1868 in Berthierville, PQ, Canada. He came to the United States in 1882 and died in Woonsocket, RI in February of 1918. He married Emerelise Coutu July 30, 1889 at St. Felix de Valois parish in Berthierville. She subsequently remarried and died in Woonsocket in 1949. I have full documentation to this point.
3) Telesphore's father was Louis Demers born probably in May 1845 in Berthierville and died in Woonsocket in January of 1918. Louis had married Clefire Aubuchon July 2, 1866 at St. Felix de Valois in Berthierville. She died in Woonsocket in 1933. I have not been able to locate Louis' birth records.
4) Louis father is unknown. His mother was Anastasie Demers who accompanied the family when they moved to Rhode Island in 1882 and died July 13, 1884 in Woonsocket. She was probably born May 4, 1812 and appears to have married a Joseph Elie Barbeau on August 2, 1832 at Ste. Genevieve in Berthierville. She appears in land records and census info in 1871 and 1881 but always as Anastasie Demers. What ever happened to the Barbeau'connection' especially since she also shows up as Anastasie Demers, a godmother in 1836 or so? In any event, she was buried from Precious Blood Parish in Woonsocket in 1884. A notation in the church records makes reference to a Xavier Autin as a possible ex but here again, no documentation can be located. Also, I have no specific birth information for Louis nor any other documentation which would lead me to believe that her marriage was dissolved for whatever reason. I've checked all death and other records and she seems not to have wanted to reveal her husband's (?) name! One of her brothers was Isidore who owned the property which she and her family lived in in Berthier for some time. Isidore also shows up at her son Louis' marriage in 1866.

Any help would be appreciated. Even solid recommendations for research in Canada would be helpful since some of my information will probably have to come from Notarial records which are not locally available - if they exist at all.

Thank you.
