Dodd, 1860 Census) George was inducted into the Confederate Army in Massie's Mill, Nelson County, Virginia, March 10, 1862. George served in Nelson Artillery, Rives Battery as a Private. (W. Cullen Sherwood, The Nelson Artillery Lamkin and Rives Batteries, The Virginial Regimental History Series) George was released from active duty August 13, 1862. (W. Cullen Sherwood, The Nelson Artillery Lamkin and Rives Batteries, The Virginial Regimental History Series) George was declared "unfit for duty due to a serofuta producing disease of the tibia bone in the leg with a considerable loss of bone". Apparently the discharge was either not put into effect or George chose to remain in the service of his company. George was listed on all calls to muster up until December 31, 1863. George was then detached to the Quarter Master and served as a shoe maker. George was listed as on furlough at the next two muster calls in March 1864 and July 1864. George's extra duty pay was reduced from $3 a day down to $2 a day on August 1864.
