Generation No. 2

      2. John2 Demasters (Demasters(?)1) was born 14 Oct 1754 in Amherst Co, VA (Source: Donald Carlton Jeter Pension Application Gerald Ross Hartman), and died Mar 1831 in Nelson Co, VA (Source: Donald Carlton Jeter Pension Application). He married Martha Patsy Moran 29 Jul 1779 in Augusta Co, VA (Source: Donald Carlton Jeter Pension Application), daughter of Nicholas Moran and Winifred Coffey.

Notes for John Demasters:
Revolutionary War Pension Application of Martha Moran Demasters, Widow of John Demasters, Nelson Co, VA, 1842:

DEMASTERS (Masters, John (Martha). W.3394.
23 July 1842. Nelson Co, VA. Martha (X) Demasters of said county, aged 82, declares she is the widow of John Demasters who enlisted early in the war for two or three years and served his time out and was married to Martha after he returned home on 29 July 1779 by Parson Waddle in Augusta County where they went to be married from Amherst County. John was again called into service, was taken sick in service at Dan River and returned home in very feeble health after being absent forty days. John never applied for a pension, preferring to do without it. He did apply for land bounty before he died, which was received by his heirs after his death. John Demasters died in Nelson County in 1830.

4 Dec 1783. John Masters, soldier of infantry, Continental Line, was granted by Virginia a certificate for f36.0.0 for the balance of his full pay, delivered to Mr. Peyton.

12 Nov 1784. John Masters, soldier of infantry, Continental Line, was granted by Virginia a certificate for f14.6.4 for the balance of his full pay, delivered to Col. S. Cabell.

7 Aug 1830. John Masters of Nelson Co, VA, appoints Archer Ferguson of Richmond his attorney to secure bounty land from Virginia.

27 Aug 1830. Warrant 6749 for 200 acres was issued by Virginia to John Masters and delivered to Archibald Ferguson.

13 Nov 1841, Nelson Co, VA. Catharine Jones of said county declares she was present at the marriage of John DMasters with Martha DMasters in July 1779, to the best of her recollection, after John DMasters had served a tour of two years in the regular service.

31 Dec 1842, Nelson Co, VA. Edmund F. Coffey declares he extracted the leaf containing the dates of birth of John DMasters and Martha DMasters his wife from the original family record, all of which is in his own handwriting. Coffey adds that the above is substantially correct except that the register is not in the handwriting of John DeMasters. He knows, however, to be his family register. John DMasters could not write.
Bible (half page only): "John DMasters was Born Oct. the 14th 1754
Martha DMasters Was Born July 17th 1760
Winiford DMasters was Born February the 6th 1781.
Nancy DMasters was Born April the 27th 1783
James DMasters was born October the 18th 1785
Nicholas DMasters was born Febuary the 18th 1788
Jane DMasters was born Oct. the 13th 1791
Jesse DMasters was born March the 19th 1783.
John DMasters was born December the 15th 1796
Moris DMasters was born October the 29th 1801
Polly DMasters was born December the 4th 1804."

2 May 1843. The Clerk of Augusta Co., Va., declares there is no record of marriages prior to 1783. A marriage by Parson Waddell may have taken place in Orange County since there was a preacher by that name who lived in Orange many years since.

25 April 1845. Nelson Co., Va. Martha (X) DeMasters alias Masters, of said county, aged 84, declares her husband John DeMasters entered service under Capt. Samuel P. Cabell in 1776 for two years, served out the period and returned to Amherst (now Nelson) County and married Martha Moran on 29 July 1779. They went to Augusta County for the purpose of being married by Parson Wadell who lived in that county. After their marriage he was called upon to go again into service and left home for a southern expedition. He went as far as Dan River and was taken sick and after forty days returned home. Their oldest child, Winifred, was born 6 Feb. 1781. John Demasters was born 14 Oct. 1754 and died in 1830. Martha Demasters was born 17 July 1760.

25 April 1845. Nelson Co., Va. Mary (X) Coffey declares she is 40 years old and is daughter of John Demasters alias John Masters of Nelson County, deceased, whose widow Martha is applicant for a pension. Her mother is mistaken in the time of the death of John Demasters. John Demasters died in March 1831, not in 1830. One of her children was born the day preceding that on which her father died.

Sworn before Edmund F. Coffey\\
28 April 1845. Nelson Co., Va. Charles Purvis declares he will be 86 years old on 11 December next and has resided in this county for more than 75 years. He was acquainted with John Demasters alias Masters who was a soldier in the Revolution and resided in Nelson County. A considerable number of men enlisted under Capt. Samuel J. Cabell about the commencement of the war and went into service. He believes John Demasters, alias Masters, was one. After his first period of service he returned to this county, then included in Amherst County, and was married. Demasters married before the close of the war.

29 April 1845. Nelson Co., Va. Catherine (X) Jones, aged 85 on 11 June next, declares John Demaster, alias Master, of said county served two years as a regular soldier. After his first tour of service he returned home to this county, then included in Amherst County, and married Martha Moran. She went with Martha and John to Parson Wadell's in Augusta and knows the marriage took place two or three years before the close of the war. John Demasters after his marriage went into service in the militia and served for some time.

24 Nov. 1845. Nelson Co., Va. Edmund S. Coffey declares he will be 73 years old in March 1846. He frequently heard John DeMasters alias Masters speak of his service in the Revolution and of having been taken prisoner by the British on Long Island. He thinks he was taken prisoner at the battle of White Plains. After he was taken prisoner the British officers wished him to swear allegiance to the King of England which he refused to do. He stated he served under Gen. Washington. He lived his whole life on the Tye River in Nelson Co., Va., and was never in Indiana as far as the affiant ever heard, and certainly not during the latter part of his life. He died about 1830 or 1831. Sworn before Edmund F. Coffey. \\

26 Nov. 1845. Nelson Co., Va. Col. Charles Perrow, aged 57, declares for twenty years past he has been a practicing lawyer. He always understood John DeMasters, alias Masters, who died some years since in said county, was a soldier under Col. Samuel J. Cabell. From about 1805 till 1808 he frequently saw Col. Samuel J. Cabell meeting with his old soldiers on Court Day at Amherst old Court House when he was in the habit of treating them. He has seen DeMasters and Col. Samuel J. Cabell in company and Col. Cabell always recognized DeMasters as one of his old soldiers.

27 Nov. 1845. Nelson Co., Va. The court certifies on the affidavit of Edmund S. Coffey that John DeMasters, alias Masters, served under Col. Samuel P. Cabell and always resided in Nelson County.

5 Dec. 1845. The Clerk of Amherst Co., Va., declares he cannot find evidence of the marriage of John DeMasters, alias Masters, with Martha Moran. The records of marriages in the earlier days of the county were very irregularly and imperfectly kept.

28 Jan. 1846. Nelson Co., Va. Martha (X) Demasters declares that having had her memory refreshed, her husband returned home on furlough at the time he was sick, and after his recovery returned to the army again.

1 Sept. 1846. Nelson Co., Va. Martha (X) Demasters of said county applies for benefits under the Act of 1838.

3 Feb. 1847. Nicholas DeMasters writes from Waynesborough, Augusta Co., VA., that he is requested by his grandmother, Mrs. Martha DeMasters, to ask what additional evidence is necessary to procure additional pension under the Act of 1836 or 1838.

7 Oct. 1848. Nelson Co., Va. Martha (X) Demasters of said county, aged 88, applies for continuance of pension.

Martha Demasters, widow of John DeMasters who died in 1830, private in the company of Capt. Cabell in the Virgina line for two years, was placed on the Richmond, VA., pension roll at $80 per annum. Certificate 12016 under the Act of 1838 and 7965 under the Acts of 1843 and 1844 were issued 29 Sept. 1846, and certificate 3548 under the Act of 1848 was issued 31 Jan. 1849.

"Marriage Bonds and Other Marriage Records of Amherst County, Virginia 1763-1800. All the women are referred to as spinster or widow. I found that Sally's father is listed here as Thomas not Henry. So probably nothing new except maybe that the marriage was the first one for both Edward and Sally.
