Descendants of Cornelius DEHART

Generation No. 1

      1. Cornelius5 DEHART (Elias Simon4, Symon Aertzen3 de Hart, Aert Symonz2, DeHart1 Sources) was born Abt. 1707 in Brooklyn, NY, and died Abt. 1778 in Amity, Berks Co., PA-Died intestate, land deeds-lists childrens names, tax record. He married Maria Catherine Unknown in Unknown. She died Abt. 1784.

Notes for Cornelius DEHART:
Find Aert Symonz DeHart and go to father DeHart source then, note page for a list of sources used in my research on DeHart's and related surnames.

Cornelius is listed buying 150 acres of land from Charles Foulke on April 6, 1742. The land traces back to an Andrew Rudeman in Amity Twp., Berks Co., Pennsylvania. This information was found in "The Laws of Pennsylvania & The Statutes At Large," by Candy Crocker Livengood on page 30.

I sent a request for the above land records to the Division of Archives and Manuscripts, Post Office Box 1026, Harrisburg, PA 17108-1026. I received a certified patent with seal from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Historical and Museum Commission. It stated the copy of the patent was reproduced from film of an original record recorded in A Book, Volume 3, Page 101. The land of Andrew Rudeman was granted to him from William Penn Proprietor and Governor of the Province of Pennsylvania. The patent was made on October 28, 1701. At that time Amity Twp. was in Philadelphia County. The survey was for one-thousand acres of land on Schuykill River near Maxatawny Creek.

A great book called "Oley Heritage Colonial Years 1700-1775 by Philip E. Pendleton was a great source for the DeHart family in Amity Twp. It was published by The Pennsylvania German Society, Oley, Pennsylvania, The Oley Valley Heritage Association, in 1994. There is a picture of the Cornelius DeHart house circa 1760 with an addition circa 1825-1850. Per the author the first that settled in Amity Twp. were Swedish. By 1708 other groups migrated from Monmouth Co. and areas of central New Jersey. He stated that these people included Netherlanders (from Holland or Netherlands) and others. In this wave were DeHart, Winter, Bord, Sadowski, Campbell, Warren, and Lincoln Families. Later Swiss, French, and Quaker families came. There was an exaggeration of the proportion of French ancestry and over the years it was generalized as being being settled by the Oley Huguenots. Also, included in his book are two maps for two time periods with the tracts in Amity Township and the landowners.

Several years ago I checked with the Huguenot Society. The earliest DeHart's were not considered to be Huguenots due to lack of proof in regards to church records. The earliest was from Holland and definite proof as to parentage has not been found to date. I have heard of a William who lived in France and left to gain religious freedom. However, no direct link or does anyone have a source as documented proof to support this thought.

Allied families of the Pennsylvania DeHart's are the following: Weidner/Widner, Hoerner/Horner/Harner, Feger, Dease, Charles, Greiner, Ludwig, Hahn/Hawn, and Teider/Deeter.

Johannas, Catherine, and Cornelius were baptized in the New Hanover Lutheran Church/Swamp Church by Henry M. Muhlenberg. Of interest is the spelling of Johannas. When this name is spelled with an (a) it is a female. When it is spelled with an (e) it is male. Therefore, I feel this is the daughter Johanna/Hanna daughter of Cornelius.

Cornelius DeHart's name appears on Berks Co. tax lists for 1754,1759,1767, 1768. The widow DeHart was taxed for the property in 1779 and 1780. Original tax list states DeHart's estate in 1778. Most of his sons were weavers as he was.

Cornelius died intestate about 1777/1778. Land deeds gave name of the widow and their childrens names as well as, their spouses names. His son Cornelius is the only child not mentioned in these records. It is my opinon that he died young.

Notes for Maria Catherine:
On April 21, 1784 daughter, Anna requested a guardian at that time. Maria's birth, baptism, marriage date, date of death, and where buried are unknown. On a land deed she is listed as Cornelius' wife and lists their children. Her first name is listed with Cornelius on church records as parents of three of their children.

  Notes for Cornelius DeHart:
Cornelius was not listed on land deeds when father died intestate. One theory could be that he died young or moved away. I have not found any other records on him other then his baptismal record.
