|I saw behind me those who had gone, and before me those who are to come.
I looked back and saw my father, and his father, and all our fathers,
and in front to see my son, and his son, and the sons upon sons beyond.
And their eyes were my eyes…
Every man is a quotation from all his ancestors.
--Ralph Waldo Emerson
So, one day I started wondering about my heritage. I did not have a real “ethnic” name, and so I guess I never carried with me that nationalistic sentimentality. I went about my life as an American, nothing more, nothing less. But as I got older, and I watched those around me die, I got worried. Certainly I had a past, but where was it? Those that were silently withering away around me were the ones with the answers; they were the ones who held the key to a still untold and undocumented past. So I asked questions, I wrote down answers, fragmented ideas, and clues, and from this jumbled assortment of facts, I put together a narrative framework of our collective past. I hope this page helps to shed some light on who we are as individuals…
I have been in contact with several people from Finland, both distant relatives and various church parishes, all of which have helped me tremendously in my research.
I am interested in the genealogy of the surnames: Deming, Gustafson, Karjula, Lehtinen, Lotze, McNulty, and any other surnames which appear in the tree.
If we have common relatives, I would love to hear from you and share our information.
