ONALD GRAVES:
THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, WALLINGFORD 5/17/1981

A SPECIAL EVENT IN OUR WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY WILL BE THE DEDICATION OF THE FINAL STAINED GALSS PANEL SET WITHIN THE FRAMING OF THE WINDOWS OF THE SANCTUARY. THIS EIGHTH PANEL IS THE LAST ONE IN A SERIES DESIGNED BY DONALD GRAVES, A MEMBER OF OUR CONGREGATION.

DON BEGAN HIS STAINED GALSS ARTISTRY AFTER ILLNESS AND SERIOUS SURGERY FORCED AN EARLY RETIREMENT. HE LEARNED THE CRAFT BY READING, WATCHING OTHERS AT WORK, AND HIS OWN EXPERIMENTATION, WITHOUT FORMAL TRAINING. HIS FIRST EFFORT WAS THE "LOAVES AND FISHES" MOBILE IN THE NARTHEX. HE THEN BEGAN MAKING PANELS FOR THE SANCTUARY, AND AS HIS EFFORTS EVOLVED, THE PANELS BECAME PART OF A SERIES DEPICTING THE SEASONS OF THE CHRISTAIN YEAR.

DON DESIGNED AND MADE THE SEVEN PANELS THAT HAVE BEEN IN PLACE ALREADY. THE REMAINING FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR TO BE DEPIECTED WAS EPIPANY, THE COMMEMORATION OF THE VISIT OF THE WISE MEN TO BETHLEHEM. DON PREPARED THE SKETCHES FOR THIS WINDOW, AND PLANNED TO ATTEMPT PAINTING ON GLASS FOR THIS FINAL PANEL. JUST A WEEK AFTER COMPLETING THE SKETCHES, IN DECEMBER 1978, DON DIED VERY SUDDENLY.

AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF SERCHING FOR SOMEONE TO CREATE THE PANEL DON HAD DESIGNED, WE FOUND AN ARTIST WILLING TO DO IT FOR US. SHE IS GAIL GRANUCCE, A WALLINGFORD RESIDENT WHO TEACHES HIGH SCHOOL ART IN CROMWELL. GAIL ALSO GIVES INSTRUCTION IN STAINED GLASS WORK. SHE HAS MADE A PANEL THAT IS FAITHFUL TO DON'S PLAN AND DONE BEAUTIFUL WORK ON IT.

IT IS A JOY TO HAVE THIS SERIES COMPLETE AND TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO HONOR DON NOT ONLY FOR HIS WORK BUT FOR HIS QUIET BUT LASTING CONTRIBUTION TO OUR CHURCH. DON WAS A BEAUTIFUL PERSON WHO, LIKE THE WINDOWS HE CREATED, LET THE LIGHT FORM BEYOUND SHINE THROUGH.
