Mrs. Sisler suggests getting from Texas State Library in Austin the following:
"First Settlers in Bowie and Cass Co." 976.4197W583
"Index to Probate Cases Filed in Texas Vol. 19"
for Bowie County, TX 976.4T313
These were checked on a trip to Austin in November, 1995 and Duke was not listed in Vol. 19.
Mrs. Sisler says that John Duke, John H. Duke and William Sims all had land records in 1836 in Red River. In 1841, John Duke died. John Duke, Jr. was asked to administer the estate. Red River was formed from the County of Bowie where the father's land was. John Duke, the junior, asked permission for the estate to be tranferred from Bowie County.
The court house burned down, so the records should have been in the above books at Austin.
