I have been working on my family history for about 12 years.I was stuck for awhile trying to trace the NELSON family tree. I began with Victor Nelson, born in Sweden 10 Mar 1883 and Ingeborg Kristianson Nelson, born 11 Apr 1882 in Norway, my maternal grandparents. A family story has it that Grandpa Vic changed his name from Bjork,to Nelson, upon immigration because he hated the mispronunciation of Bjork. It turns out,Nelson or more properly Nilsson, is the true family name in Sweden. The name Kristianson is correct, but may be spelled a variety of ways.Norwegians also added a farm name to some families surnames, which complicated searching even further. Through the help of some great people over the net, I was able tofind our Swedish and Norwegian connections.I have not properly sourced most of the material, but I feel it is mostly accurate. An interesting story came to light when I GOOGLED the name of Grandpa's youngest brother, George Nelson Bjork, born 13 Jun 1892. He came over to America with his brother Anton. He joined the U. S. Armyin 1917 He lived in Polson in 1917 and registered for WW1 draft June 5,1917 He was not a citizen at that time, he listed occupation as farm labor and named his employer as his brother probably Anton or Victor He described himself as tall slender with blue eyes He was killed in transit to Europe when the S.S. Tuscania was torpedoed by German submarines. He and the others that perished were originally buried in Scotland until the Army brought him back and reburied him in Arlington National Cemetery Please visit this website to learn more http://renton.50megs.com/Tuscania | NILSSON, BJORK, KRISTIANSONAND EXTENDED FAMILYPAGE Updated November 1, 2008 |
