Adaline Carnes (b. June 29, 1840, d. August 05, 1924)
Notes for Adaline Carnes:
Adaline had very little schooling and worked as a household helper until her marriage.After her marriage to Jacob Denny, they lived at the west end of Cherry St. in a cottage on the home place of Jacob Denny's father and mother.The elder Dennys lived in the larger house.On March 29, 1876 the elder Mrs. Denny died of cancer of the face and after her death Adaline and Jacob moved into the larger house with the father, Michael Denny unti the time of his death in July, 1879.
Later Adaline and Jacob lived in 2 different places on Cherry St., at one time on the hill on the south side of the street and later on the north side in a 2 story brick house (which was later damaged by th cyclone which destroyed so much fo that area of New Albany).Sometime later they moved into town and lived on Fourth and Oak Sts., one the east side of the street, and after the death of Jacob in 1916, Adaline moved to a cottage on the west side, where she died.
Following is a copy of her death notice which was between the pages of her bible--Now in possession of her granddaughter, Thelma (Stone) Smith:
"Was Stricken By Death While Seated In Chair"
Seated in a chair and conversing with her son, Walter Denny, shortly after arising from her bed, Mrs. Adaline Denny died suddenly of heart disease at 5 o'clock Tues. morning at her home, 523 East Fourth St.She had been in ill health from a dropsical affection, but was not bedfast and was sitting in her yard Mon. night before retiring.
Dr. Frank Tyler, county coroner, was called and found that death was caused by an attaci of heart disease due to the dropsical condition.
Mrs. Denny is survived by five sons, Walter, Edward, and Jacob Denny, Jr., of this city; Andrew Denny fo Columbus, IN; and Samuel Denny fo Lafayette, IN;two daughters, Mrs. Irene Russell and Mrs. Ella Stone of this city.
She was a member of the Baptist church.The funeral services will be held Thurs. afternoon at 3:30 from the residence.Burial in Fairview Cemetery.
Mazie Denny of Columbus, IN, a granddaughter, remembers Adaline Denny as having a pleasant disposition, neat in appearance, with straight black hair, which she always combed straight back and into a knot.A woman much interested in her home and her children, a good cook and with hobbies of quilt making, gardening and rug making.She had snappy brown eyes and a ready smile.She still remembers her grandmother striking her hands together and exclaiming "Gosh" or "Land Sakes".
