8. The James Montgomery in the 1851 census of Cornwall Twp., Ontario may be the son of Cornelius Montgomery. He was a 14-year old labourer wholisted his birthplace as Upper Canada.

10. At the time of the Civil War, Americans who did not want to serve in the Northern Army could hire others to serve for them. Agents were active inCanada recruiting substitutes and volunteers. According to history books,these recruits were given $1800 for fighting in the Civil War. Twomembers of the Cornelius Montgomery family, James and Robert, servedin the Union Army during the Civil War. Bob and James remembered thatthey were three days marching to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and threehours running away. They were blacksmiths, and likely participated inthe Service Corps rather than as front line soldiers. Bob and James weretalented singers and musicians. After the war, they joined a companythat travelled throughout the U.S.
11.Gertrude Montgomery married Peter Riviere.Gertrude died 17 Feb 1942 (age = 70 years).Peter Riviere was buried 3 May 1936 at 63 years of age.

Their son, John McCallum live next door on the W 1/2 ofLot 2.The agricultural census for 1861 revealed that Duncan McCallum's100-acre farm consisted of 40 acres of crops, 10 acres of pasture and50 acres of bush. The cash value of the farm was $900 with a livestockvalue of $320. Duncan was also the postmaster of thefirst post office inRoxborough Twp. It was located in his home. Duncan was part of thedistrict council in 1843 (Cornwall Observer, Vol 12 No. 33, August 31,1843).

He received 0 - 6 - 0 in Halifax Currency for 6days of work in the First Regiment of the Stormont Militia. (Reference:Reel B-3193, P.A.C.). There was also a Private Duncan McCallum listed inthe Third Regiment of the Glengarry Highlanders.
8.On the 15th of August 1853, Benjamin Helmer and his wife, Margaret McCallum, provided a piece of property (North West Corner of Lot A,Concession 1, Roxborough Twp) for the Congregational Church ofRoxborough Twp. Duncan McCallum and Nelson Montgomery signed aswitnessed in this transaction.
9.The tax assessment for Roxborough Twp. in 1866 and 1867 listed Mrs. McCalllum.She was recorded separately from her sons John and DuncanMcCalum.Tax records suggest that she left Roxborough Twp. in 1867 or1868.She went to Bruce County with her daughter, Susanna and Robert Begg.
10.The will of Duncan McCallum mentioned that his wife's name was Diana. He left 100 acres of land in Con 1 or Roxborough Twp to his son, John.John must care for his mother. He left $300 to his daughter, Christy Ann.He willed Lot 17, Con 4 in Roxborough Twp to his son, Duncan McCallum.
11.The book - Reflections on Monkland & District (p.42) listed Christianna McCallum as a teacher at S.S. No. 1 Roxborough Twp (Lot 4, Con1) from 1863 to 1865.Her salary was $ 9 per month.There was a ChristyMcCalllum (age = 62 years) living alone in Charlottenburgh Twp, GlengarryCounty ON at the time of the 1891 census.This may be another ChristyMcCallum since there were other McCallum families living around MartintownON.The McCallum family bible indicates that Christy McCallum marriedJ. E. Graham.
12.Jean Aldridge (file # 4debb) has a letter written by Christina McCallum to her sister, Susanna.The letter was written 24 Sep 1854 fromRoxborough Twp.It mentions their three brothers, Duncan, William, John,John's wife, Catherine, and Grandma.
