5. Agricultural Census (1861). S 3/4 Lot 12, Con 4, Roxborough Twp. The 150 acre farm included 112 acres of woods with the remainder in pasture and crops. The cash value of the farm was $1200. The value of farm implements was $80. There were 6 bulls, 6 heifers, 3 cows, 2 horses valued at $160, 2 fillies or colts, 8 sheep, and 3 pigs. The value of the livestock was $322. Supplies included 300 pounds of butter, 30 pounds of barley, 180 bushels of oats, 10 tons of hay, 24 pounds of wool, 100 pounds of maple syrup, 21 yards of cloth and 25 yards of flannel. The family lived in a one storey log house.

* In 1868, James Nelson Montgomery was taxed in the SE 1/4 of Lot 12. In 1868, John Wesley Montgomery was taxed on the SW 1/4 of Lot 12. David and Mary Montgomery lived with John and Elizabeth Montgomery.

8. In 1847, the first school and Sunday School at Gravel Hill were taught in John Montgomery's barn. In 1852, a school was built on John's land. John donated the land for St. James Presbyterian Church at Gravel Hill. The church was built in 1863. The deed for the property and cemetery was dated Dec. 31, 1862 and states: "In the name of the trustees of the congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Canada in connection with the Church of Scotland in Roxborough Township."

9. After John's death, Elizabeth lived with her son, David.

Microfilm C-3030, entry #1862 on p. 8 of Vol. 2 - P.A.C. Baptisms by Rev. John Bethune: "Magdalane Marie, Montgomery, daughter of John Montgomery of Roxborough and Susannah Lilly, his wife, was born on 7th June, and baptized on the 11th Augt, 1811."

Ontario Register, Vol 2, p. 165, 1969. Marriage by Proclamation on 17 Mar 1835 in Osnabruck Twp. by the Rev. Robert Lyle, Presbyterian minister. Marriage is witnessed by Joseph Brownell.

The family Bible of Philip Levi Montgomery, now in the possession of Harold Montgomery, contains the following entry: Maria Milross died in Des Moines, Iowa in 1848." Our research has not uncovered any further details about this family. Attempts to locate a burial date for Magdalena Montgomery have not been successful. Her death date of 1848 precedes any records in the possession of the archives of Des Moines, Iowa.

Autobiography by James Begg "My wife had been living with a sister in the 2nd Concession of Cornwall and that is where we got married. Her parents were not agreeable to the match as they were very well off in wordly goods and I was poor. Our wedding was small." The sister that is referenced above is probably Magdalane Marie who would already be married. On 10 April, 1839, James Begg married Eliza Eleanor Montgomery (b. 1813) who was a younger sister of Magdalane Marie Montgomery (b. 1811).

Letter dated Dec 1846, Desmoins (sic) County, Iowa mentions: -murders of Joseph and Hiram two years last June (1844) -a fight that John had participated in. Three of their men had been killed out of 100 men. The other side "the mob" had 1500 men. -Church at Council Blluffs -son David b.10 March 1846 and d. 3 July 1846 -Agnes is nearly as big as me -Thomas -John -Nelson -Nelson d. 25 Jan 1848 -William is just starting to talk Note that the letter by Maria Millross was written about one week prior to the death of Maria Millross.

In the 1850 census for Lee County, des Moins district, Iowa there is an Agnes Millross (14 years old, born in Canada). Agnes is living with the family of Nelson Gardner.
