I am researching DEVLIN (Protestant Irish) in Ontario, Canada and Northern Ireland in the 1800s, JAMES and MUNSON in Ontario in the 1800s, RUSSEL from Scotland and Pennsylvania in the 1700s, BAGG in Michigan and Massachusetts in the 1700s and 1800s, PEABODY in Michigan, New York, and Massachusetts from the 1600s on, BAXTER in Connecticut and Michigan in the 1700s and 1800s, SIBLEY and CAMPAU in Detroit in the 1700s and 1800s, GANT, HARVEY, SHAFTO, and DONAHAY in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, New Jersey in the 1700s and 1800s, and BRENNAN and DONALDSON in northeastern New Jersey in the mid 1800s, and ROSS and BORLAND in Glasgow, Scotland in the early 1800s.
My husband's family includes PETTY, KELLER, WALLACE, and CARLOCK families, in southern Illinois in the last 100 years. His tree is still developing its basic roots--more later!

    While Catherine Russel Devlin had been raised with cooks and housekeepers in Detroit, in this primitive north woods kitchen she learned to cook for her family, the workmen, and their many summer visitors.

  • A picture of "R.L. Gant, Lakewood, New Jersey" (130 KB)
    This picture was found by Judy Latham in a West Virginia antique shop. Writing on the back of the picture identifies it as "R.L. Gant, Lakewood, New Jersey". My grandfather, Raymond Leroy Gant, was born in Lakewood but had brown not blue eyes. Artistic license, or another relative? Clues gladly accepted!

    Megan's great great grandmother, Caroline Munson, was born in Collingwood, Ontario. She married George Albert Devlin, a pharmacist, and moved to Detroit, MI c. 1890.
  • Erle and Catherine Russel Devlin, 1911 (277 KB)
    Megan's great grandparents, at the time of their marriage. Later, in the early 1920's, they started the "Beaver Rock Club" on the eastern shore of Lake Superior, roughly 100 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

    Three generations of "one L" Russels are gathered in this picture, including Megan's great grandmother, Catherine Russel (the girl seated at bottom far left), her father George Howard Russel, the bearded gentleman right of center in the middle row, and his father, Dr. George Black Russel, 2 left of George H., who first came to Detroit from Pennsylvania in 1836.

    Megan's great great grandmother, Ellen Beaumont Baxter, daughter-in-law of David Peabody and granddaughter of Clarissa Holley, described in the narrative below.
  • The New Jersey Ross Clan (372 KB)
    This photo, taken in the early 1940's, shows a gathering of the grown family of Megan's great grandparents, Alexander Ross, born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1868, and Agnes Brennan Ross, born in 1873 in Philadelphia (they are left of center rear). Their grown children surround them including their daughter, Evelyn Ross Gant (4th from right rear) and her husband Raymond Gant (4th from left front), Megan's maternal grandparents.
  • Erle Devlin (1888-1928) (13 KB)
    Megan's great grandfather Erle was born in Canada but, as a naturalized U.S. citizen, became a Captain in the U.S. Coastal Artillery Corps during World War I.
  • Anna Elizabeth Davenport (1827-1888) (2 KB)
    Megan's 3 Great Grandmother Anna Davenport, daughter of Louis Davenport and Sarah Horner, is the link with many old New England families, Including Davenport, Wilder, and Hawes. Her mother's family had Scottish ancestors.
  • The Beaver Rock Club, exterior (1920-1939) (34 KB)
    The Beaver Rock Club (named after the beaver-shaped landmass on the north side of MacGregor Cove, on the east shore of Lake Superior) was the home to the Erle Devlin family in the 1920's and the summer playground of many of their Russel cousins.

This portrait is written by her daughter Ellen, including reflections on Clarissa's husband, Abram Beaumont, as well as her mother, Sally House and their lives in upstate New York in the early 1800s.
  • The Will of John Devlin (c. 1775-1849) (5 KB)
    Megan's 4 great grandfather, John Devlin, came with his wife Ann (Nancy) Beatty from the areas of Armagh or Tyrone in Northern Ireland to Canada around 1828. Unlike many Devlins, the family was Protestant, Wesleyan Methodist. His will identifies his wife and his sons, including Megan's ancestor William.
