In a letter dated June 12, 1918 Mary writes "I wish this dreadful war was over" and then goes on to say that in our family we have:
A Major Joe's eldest son in Antigua
A Captain " grandson.
2 Lieutenants sons of Jem Jones
A Corporal Annie Dredge's youngest boy
A " Lezzie Kings " " besides
several privates. As yet none of them have been killed"

Before Mary's death
"Paralyzed all down the left side for about a fortnight" according to Horine Bishop who states in a letter dated October 30, 1918 that he "has lived with Aunt Mary all of my life and was like a mother to me". He also says, "we could not leave her night or day. Jane Dew and myself took it in turns to sit up during the night". The day before her death she said "brother Ted (Edward Dew) will soon be coming over to see me".
