Before Mary's death "Paralyzed all down the left side for about a fortnight" according to Horine Bishop who states in a letter dated October 30, 1918 that he "has lived with Aunt Mary all of my life and was like a mother to me". He also says, "we could not leave her night or day. Jane Dew and myself took it in turns to sit up during the night". The day before her death she said "brother Ted (Edward Dew) will soon be coming over to see me".
