He married Mary Elizabeth Bunce on 23 Nov 1864 in New York, Suffolk County, Yaphank by Revernd Charles Sturges, daughter of Jesse Smith Bunce and Nancy Smith.

"The schooner Mary E. Suydam was owned and operated by Captain Fred Smith of Underwood Street, Patchogue, He operated the schooner to bring coal from Norfolk, Virginia and or Perth Amboy, New Jersey to his coal pocket at the foot of Underwood Street. He also transported other materials for hire, such as brick down from Haverstraw, New York for E. Baily and Sons and seedling Oysters for Oystermen."

Fred Smith and family moved to11 Underwood Street in 1887. He had a 14-room house built there. They had lived in Blue Point until then. He brought his furniture in New York and sailed it via the Mary E. Suydam schooner. His coal and wood business continued through his lifetime.
The Barteau and Nichols shipyard was purchased by Capt. Fred Smith and he used the northern part (foot of Underwood St.) for his coal business and rented the ships ways to George Bishop, shipbuilder. Mr. R. Tracey conducted a machine shop in the barn of Capt. Smith
