I am currently researching my father's side of our family. My thanks to Vona Smith who pointed me in the direction of the connecting link back to Tjerck Claessen DeWitt and beyond: 13 generations from Jan DeWitt (b. abt 1565) to my children.

My grandfather was Jacob DeWitt, born February 22, 1879 in Lockport, Illinois. I have been told that all those records were destroyed in a fire. The family moved to Montreal, Canada when Jacob was a child due to the illness (T.B.?) of his eldest sister, Abigail Sophronia, who taught at the High School of Montreal (at the time a boy's school) in the early 1900's. I believe the family had also lived in Geneva, New York, before Jacob's birth. Jacob married Julia Maria Hill of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, who bore him five sons, John Henry, Charles Gould, George Hill, Roy Borden and William Norton, all now deceased. They lived for a while in Montreal where Jacob was a successful lawyer (KC). At about the age of 40 he retired and moved with his family to St. Andrew's East where the boys grew up.

Jacob's father was Caleb Strong DeWitt born July 5, [1840?] and died July 15, 1905 in or near East Farnham, Quebec.

Caleb's father was another Jacob (b. Sep. 17/1785 d. Mar 23 1859). (This is the conecting link I needed)

I have not yet located any "reliable sources" aside from family tradition and hearsay for any of my information. I believe Vona Smith has doucmented her sources, but I do not have any of that information.

If you have any information that might assist me in my search, please contact me. I'd be more than happy to share information. Thank you.
