Notes for Gennaro Barbiero: The death records in Stato Civile, Comuni di Ielsi, Provinica di Campobasso, Regione di Molise, for the years 1893 and 1894 contain the translation into Italian of the Record of Death of one Giacomo Barber filed on 13 December 1887 in Columbus, Ohio. He died in Saint Francis Hospital in that city. It was ascertained by Italian authorities in Ielsi, Italy in 1894 that Giacomo Barber and Gennaro Barbiero were the same person. Gennaro Barbiero had immigrated to the United States to find work, intending to accumulate money and return to his family in Italy. He arrived at the port of New York on 19 November 1886 aboard the ship Britannia from Naples. The ship registry shows his name as Janaro (phonetic English spelling) Barbiero. After arriving in the U.S. he apparently Anglicized his surname to Barber and, for unknown reasons, his given name was recorded on the death certificate as Giacomo, rather than Gennaro.
