Ancestors of DONALD ROBERT DICKENSON Through 24 Generations
146.Lt. Joshua Pierce, born January 25, 1704/05 in Pembroke, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts; died March 13, 1794 in (age 89) Cornwall, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. He was the son of 292. John Peirce and 293. Elinor (Chiles) Childs. He married 147. Hopestill Holloway November 20, 1729 in Middleboro, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.
147.Hopestill Holloway, born 1703 in Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts; died April 10, 1784 in (age 81) Cornwall, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. She was the daughter of 294. Malachi Holloway and 295. Elizabeth Shove.
Notes for Lt. Joshua Pierce:
Joshua Pierce was probably the son of John Pierce and his first wife, Elinor (Childs) Pierce. He was baptized on February 22, 1713 in Pembroke, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.According to A History of Cornwall, Litchfield Co., Connecticut (Starr, 1926)" as a boy he was poor and "deserted" and was bound out to a hard master."This may have had to do with the fact that his mother appears to have died when he was a small child. As a young man he gave half of the wages of one years hire, while he lived in Pembroke, for the building of a new church.
Note: Some published family histories have confused this Joshua Pierce with the Joshua Pierce, son of Joshua Pierce of Newbury, Massachusetts, who was born October 31, 1700 and died August 13, 1754.This is clearly not correct.
According to Middleborough Vital Records Book 1, page 40, on November 29, 1729, "Joshua Peirce of Pembroke and Hopstill Holloway of Middleborough was married by Benjamin Ruggles".She was the daughter of Malachi Holloway and his wife, Elizabeth (Shove) Holloway.Joshua and Hopestill moved from Pembroke to Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut. On May 14, 1743 Joshua Pierce "of Pembroke in the County of Plymouth in the Providence of Massachusetts" for 250 pounds bought 50 acres including a dwelling house in Cornwall from Benjamin Bissell. The deed was recorded May 14, 1743 by George Holloway (his brother-in-law], town clerk (Cornwall Deed Book 1, page 74).
On May 17, 1748, they bought, from Joshua Jewell, the place consisting of three hundred and three acres which was later owned by Major Seth Pierce.Joshua was remarkably prosperous in acquiring property. He paid 3,000 pounds for the farm he bought from Joshua Jewell. However, as he increased in wealth, he also became very benevolent. His reputation and standing was such that he was one of the first persons chosen to represent the town of Cornwall in the legislature - to which position he was reelected for ten different sessions. He was described as being "a good ministerial man for the office who showed himself to be a genuine descendant of the Puritans in principle and feeling".Following the death of Hopestill on April 10, 1784, he married on October 28, 1784, as his second wife, widow Hannah (Lockwood) Starr from Danbury. Her first husband was Comfort Starr.Joshua died "in the 89th year of his age" in Cornwall, Litchfield Co., Connecticut on March 13, 1794 and is buried in the Cornwall Cemetery on Route 4 at Town Street..
Note:While the Anna Pierce who married Titus Bonney has sometimes been identified as the eldest daughter of Joshua Pierce Jr. and Amy Johnson who was born December 5, 1756; because of Anna and Titus' February 21, 1771 marriage date, it appears that, instead, she was the youngest daughter of Joshua Pierce Sr. who was born February 20, 1750.This seems confirmed by the fact that she was 89 years old when she died in March, 1838 in Portage Co., Ohio.
