I've obtained some information from a cousin suggesting that we are descendants of Jacob McClendon (b.ca.1725 - ?) and wife Martha. Their children were:Isaac,Samuel,Francis, Dennis,Ames,Jemima,Laney,Penelope, Nancy & Bartheny(?).

Jacob's daughter Nancy (b.ca.1758)married William Heard in 1782. William was born in Hanover County, VA in 1750. Their children were Jesse Heard (b.1783),Betsy Heard, Lany Heard, Bartheny Heard, Charles Heard,William McClendon Heard (b.1792) & Nancy Heard.

Nancy Heard (1785-1876)married Azariah Bostwick (1778-1813) of Wilkes & Morgan counties, GA. He was a son of William Bostwick & Mary Bailey. Nancy died in 1876 & buried in Newton County.

Can someone out there confirm or substantiate any of the above information? Any assistance or suggestions would be tremendously appreciated! Thank you.

-----------------

There was another McClendon family in Newton Co Ga. about the years you state- Is it possible they are related?
Jesse McClendon b ca1820-married Mary Branan of Newton Co, Covington I think-Jesse had at least one brother Oliver-their mother is believed to be a Frances McClendon-a widow on the 1850 census.
Jesse and his bride and first daughter moved to Atlanta(Fulton Co) Ga. in 1861-there 4 more children were born- if you think there is a relationship of yours and mine-I will send you names and dates of the other children. Thanks

---------------------

The children of Jacob and Martha (Travis) McClendon were: Issac, Jemima, Jacob, Samuel Travis, Dennis, Laney, Nancy, Amos, Penelope and Bethaney.

Nancy married William Heard in 1782. She was born in 1764 Cumberland Co., NC.

-------------------------

There were two Jacob McClendon's who were Revolutionary Soldiers, both from Georgia. The two Jacob's and descendants have been confused....Jacob who married Martha Travis is from the lineage of Dennis the Immigrant from Perquimans County, North Carolina....This Jacob and Martha had their first two children Baptized and list the parents as Jacob McClendon and wife Martha, per Baptismal record of Isaac McClendon and Jemima McClendon, recorded in St Fredrick Parish Records, Craven South Carolina....The children were baptized in Craven County North Caroina, but the Minister recorded the record in South Carolina....
>
Jacob who married Mary Fincher was from Scotland NOT NORTH CAROLINA and from a different McClendon line...Jacob gave information in his Revolutionary Records, and states he was born in Scotland.....
>
The will of Jacob McClendon, son of Thomas McLendon of North Carolina was made 1791 and probated 1793 in Wilkes Co. Georgia.>
>
Children are:
Isaac, Jemima, Jacob, Samuel, Travis, Dennis, Laney, Nancy, Amos, Penelope and Bethaney.
>
I have listed the children of Jacob McClendon named in his will in hopes it will help clear up some of the confusion of the two Jacob McClendon's. The Jacob of North Carolina and his descendants are listed in the book "McLendon's Of America" which is sold out but in reprint.....Melba

--------------------

I was in error, it was not Jacob who married Mary Fincher, but Isaac McLendon who married Mary Fincher and was born in Edinburg, Scotland. It does get confusing with the Jacob's and Isaac's dosn't it?

Isaac McClendon, was a son of Jacob not Thomas McClendon. Thomas was Isaac's grand father.... I am going to add this bit of information to give proof on the Isaac Lineages and the marriage.
>
First Isaac can be a proven son of Jacob by his baptismal record when listed as a son of Jacob and Martha in St. Fredrick Parish, South Carolina records, dated 29 May, 1753, three years after his birth. he was baptized in Craven County North Carolina and the Minister recorded the record in South Carolina.

Isaac, son of Jacob McLendon and Martha Travis married Elizabeth Stribling. While Isaac of Scotland and Georgia, and possible son of YES, Jacob McClendon married Mary Fincher.
>
Isaac, son of Jacob was executor of his father in law, Francis Stribling's will. Elizabeth Stribling was left a slave by her father.

Isaac and Elizabeth had six children named in probate court.

------------------------

As a descendant of Isaac McClendon and Mary Fincher, I am somewhat familiar with what you've posted. However, I am confused about your suggestion that Isaac (Mary's husband) might possibly be the son of Jacob. What Jacob do you mean? It sounds like you're saying that there are 2 Isaacs, with 2 different wives, but they are both sons of Jacob(?) I know of no proof of Isaac's (Mary's hubby, of Jasper Co) parentage, but it was more likely he was the son of Thomas McClendon who shows up early in GA (1805 Land Lottery) and moved west rather than sticking around Wilkes Co with Jacob and his sons. I have not attempted to find anything that proves this for years. Maybe someone has come up with something in the last 20 years.

Also, please share with me the record you cited that Isaac (Mary's hubby) was born in Scotland. Do you have any other information on this, such as a ship passenger list?

-------------------------

Hi Natalie; the source for Isaac McClendon is given in his Rev. Service papers....He was a Rev. Soldier and stated he was born in Edinburg, Scotland....I did have a large folder on Isaac before it was lost in Hurricane from Water damage....I was doing research for the McLendon book in 1981 and kept finding material on two Isaac McLendon/McClendon, who were born about the same time and both being Rev. Soldiers and both from Georgia....There has been several who have joined DAR under the Isaac from Scotland, but I have not found anyone who has joined under Isaac son of the Jacob and Martha McClendon from Cumberland Co. North Carolina and later Wilkes Co. GA.....Hope this bit of info will help you....Melba

--------------------------

Melba,
Thanks for the information. I guess I just was not curious enough to get any documentation on Isaac's Rev. War records. I'll have to look for it.
I was just rereading a genealogy prepared by a professional genealogist in the 1930's that says Isaac was born in "1754, and tradition says in Edinburg, Scotland." This researcher was aware of the 2 Isaacs, and seems to have them straight. He also says he was said to be born in Midlothian County, Scotland. He admits there is no proof. I guess I just dismissed this since there were so many McClendons in NC and he was supposed to have migrated from there.
Oh well, more questions to research!

Gerry,

I am researching the children and grandchildren of Jacob McClendon and Martha Travis who came from Perquimans Co., NC to Wilkes Co., GA after the Revolution. I am not related to this family but am doing this research for a cousin who is not online.

I believe one of Jacob's sons was named Dennis and that he d. in Wilkes Co., GA in 1814. According to the best that I can do from piecing together various Court documents, Dennis had sons Eldad and Medad. Do you have anything on the families of these two sons, especially Medad? I know that Medad d. in 1839 and left a widow named Frances. His children were Mary F., Moses J., Eldad, Lucinda.

Mary F. and Eldad, her brother, moved to Muscogee Co., GA some time after their father's death. My question now is this. Who accompanied them on this trip to West GA and where did the others that she went with locate? After all, she was only about 12 or 13 when her father died. She married (1) Nathaniel m. Huff in 1842 in Harris Co., GA when she was only 16 and (2) Rev. Carey C. Willis, a Baptist Minister, in 1846 in Muscogee Co., GA. Her brother, Eldad, joined the same church that Mary attended and died in 1847, according to the church Minutes.

I have this part of the line well documented but am uncertain about the family in Wilkes Co. and what happened to the other children after Medad died. Any information that you or anyone else on the Forum might have will be appreciated.

Reverend Eron M. Sharp wrote a book in 1960,"The Sharp Family with Allied Families" (typescript, pvt.pub. 1962), p. 123, principally about the Sharp family but the Ware family is listed at length as an allied family. Rev. Sharp names Henry Ware, Sr.(a son of Nicholas Ware) married Martha Garrett, dau. of John Garrett of Edgefield. The book lists their children as follows: John Ware; Capt. James Ware who died Morgan Co., GA, 1827; Henry Ware, Jr.; Nicholas Ware, died Morgan Co in 1827, married Mary Matthews; Robert Ware; Frances Ware; Patsey Ware; and Sarah Ware, who married Samuel McLendon(sic), Sr., of Wilkes Co., GA - they had 13 children. One of those children, according to undocumented research, is Beniah McClendon, born 20 October 1781; died 16 Sep 1856 in Wilkes Co., GA, who is said to have married Sarah Ware, daughter of Nicholas Ware. I did not do original research on this family, so cannot vouch for it. Beniah McClendon's children include William Samuel McClendon who married Elizabeth Reid of Atlanta, they moved to Leake/Scott counties, MS, in the mid-1850s.Both are buried in the McClendon/Britt Cemetery in Leake County.

Thanks Gerry.. It is not the same Benaiah but I do believe my Benaiah was a part of this family. On July 18, 1899 D.B. McClendon along with R.F. Ray witnessed my GGGrandfather's (Zachariah S. Ray) Pension application. This was applied for and witnessed in Bell Co., Texas. Zachariah S. Ray was married to Martha J. McClendon around 1847-1848. I believe that this D.B. (Benaiah) was a brother to Martha. On an 1850 census there is a Benaiah McClendon age 10- son of Henry McClendon age 62. You list Henry as a son of Sara and Samuel McClendon.

Do we have some connections anyway??
pat

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND that I've had to rely on the research of others for many of these details. BENAIAH and the second Sarah Ware are my line and I'm still working on finding out which of the Ware's were her parents. Have some good clues, but nothing definite.
Good luck. To the best of my knowledge, my Benaiah did not go to Texas, but did own property in the Texas district of Heard County, GA. Could that answer your question?

--------------------------------

I have no information about Samuel, son of Henry, but I can tell you that Henry (born 1789)and Benniah (born 1789)McClendon were brothers, children of Samuel McClendon (born 1756)and Sarah Ware, who had 14 children. The elder Samuel was the son of Jacob McClendon, born 1726.

Information on Benniah McClendon can be found in The McClendons of Carroll County, Georgia by Lois Clouse McClendon.

The children of Samuel McClendon and Sarah Ware, and the children of Samuel Jr.(born1787) are listed in a book on McClendons by T.A. McClendon. (I saw this book in a library 10 years ago a copied down some of it.)
