SECOND GENERATION3. Jane MOORE was born in 1828 in Washington, Hopewell, PA. She was married to John HAMILTON (son
of Joseph HAMILTON and MARTHA) on 20
Jan 1853. John HAMILTON
(1) was born on 15 Sep 1815 in near Cookstown Tyrone Co., Ireland.
John family moved to Lee Co., IA in 1842. In 1847 he went to Oregon with two
of his brothers. One brother lived out his life there and the other brother
was shot and killed over a dispute in 1851. The murderer was tried and hung.
John has offered the reward for the man's capture. In 1849 John went to California
when gold was discovered and he possibly was selling goods to the prospectors
like his brother. In 1950 he was back in Oregon. He then moved to Big Mound,
Lee Co., Iowa and married Jane. He was one of the orginal founders of the United
Presbyterian church in Keokuk in 1853 and one of its offiers for years. For
a number of years he was involved in the wholesale grocery business in Keokuk
and apparently retired from business pursuits at a relatively young age. It
appears he lived comfortably and had built a brick home that passed on thru the
family to one of his daughters and then to one of his grandsons who eventually
lost the home in 1938. At that point we have lost the grandson who we have nenver
found married. He Settled in 1860 in Lee County Iowa. He immigrated about 1826
with his parents to Guernsey Co., Ohio. Jane MOORE and John HAMILTON had the
following children:
