(b) Peter was the third eldest child and second eldest son of Vincent Dillon Sr. and Hannah Jackson and the last of their children to have been born on the ancestral PA farm of his ggrandfather, Peter Dillon Sr.His given name was probably taken from his ggrandfather, or his uncle, brother of his father, both interesting and unique individuals.His middle name was the maiden name of his paternal grandmother, Rachel Hamilton.The following description Peter H. and his family is taken from the 1882 Hardesty - 1887 Lake Atlas of Lawrence Co. State of Ohio; "Peter H. Dillon was born in Greene Co., PA, September 1, 1833.""His parents(Vincent Dillon and Hannah Jackson) moved to Lawrence Co., OH, in 1847, from Monroe Co., OH, settling in Windsor Twp.Peter was a self-educated man, school facilities being very limited.He turned his attention to teaching, in which he was very successful, teaching thirteen years.In 1870, April 20,he was married to Sarah E. Sites, whose birth took place in Lawrence Co., OH, November 23, 1848.Mr Dillon abandoned teaching after his marriage, and engaged in farming in Rome Township.While residing there a fire destroyed all his household effects excepting four or five articles.He then in 1877, moved to Getaway, where he opened a general merchandise store in company with J. C. Synder.In 1878, he relinquished his business and returned to farming, buying the placed where he now resides.He is now considered among the best of our farmers.The children of Mr and Mrs Dillon are: Della L. born July 2, 1871; Otto W., August 14, 1873; Maggie E., March 8, 1875; Clarence B., August 17, 1877; Elmer W., September 30, 1879."(Photo courtesy of Connie Hutchison at:[email protected]) |
