1. JOHN¹ DILLY was born in England or Scotland, and died March 1683/84 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He married SARAH.

Notes for JOHN DILLY:
The exact origin of John Dilly is open to speculation. At this point documentation is still lacking. Some think he was the son of George Dell the ship captain in Massachusetts. Others believe he was born in Hackney, England and moved to Salem, Mass. A 21 year old John Dilly lived in Salem in 1664. The John Dille Jr./ David Dille branch of the family say that he was Scottish. French background or Channel Island background is mentioned by other family members. All we know for sure is that he is listed in land records of Woodbridge , NJ and his children's births are recorded.

Notes for SARAH:
Some think that Sarah was a Woodbridge. However, there is nothing to document or even strongly suggest that connection. Several families living in Woodbridge , N.J. had children whose naming patterns show up in the Dille/Dilley family.
