MASON/MILLING/MITCHNER/PATTERSON -- My name is Michelle Discher (nee Milling) and I'm researching ancestors originating in North and South Carolina, Maryland and New York circa 1850 and later.Looking for information on gggrandfather Alexander Patterson, born a free man circa 1835 in Norfolk Va, and a barber by trade, who came to Massachussetts and joined the 54th Regiment in Worchester on December 2, 1863. He was sent to the Carolinas (not sure whether north or south) for the Cherokee relocation (Trail of Tears). He fell in love with a full-blooded Cherokee woman, left the army (honorably discharged June 16, 1865) and settled in Clayton, North Carolina with her. Their daughters: Mary, Sarah, Melinda and Lucy lived in Clayton. Lucy married William Mitchner Sr., a man from Dutch Suriname. One of their sons, Dr. William Mitchner Jr., had a practice in Wilson, NC. His siblings included sister Virindie and brother Walter. Walter married Eva Sanders of SC. They moved to Baltimore after the birth of Charles Howard Mitchner, their only child and my maternal grandfather. He married Natalie Marie Mason of St. Mary's County MD. They raised four children: Charles, Lloyd, Norma and Donald. Norma Natalie Mitchner is my mother.
Natalie (Mov) was one of four children and the oldest girl. They were in order of birth, Wilma (er), Natalie, Laurena (Dink) and James Mason Campbell (called Jummie). Natalie's father was James W. Campbell. He and Mamie Marie Mason married in 1904 in Baltimore, MD. Mamie was one of four children of James Mason and Laura Banks. Mamie, Randolph, Edna and Bernard. Randolph and Bernard were fairer than the others and upon reaching adulthood they moved to New York and Massachussetts and passed white.
