Ditmore is believed to be an anglicized version of the name Detmar or Ditmar, which originated in Bavaria. Because the name was changed to Ditmore, probably as late as the 1600's, it is an uncommon name and it is believed that all persons carrying this surname may be related by blood. Our early American ancestors lived in Charleston, South Carolina around the time of the American Revolution and moved to eastern Tennessee around 1820. Today there are about 350 Ditmore families scattered throughout the United States, most descendents of John Ditmore and Eliza Hendrickson.

This site is dedicated primarily to the descendents of John Ditmore and Eliza Hendrickson who were married in 1809 at Hampstead a village outside of Charleston, South Carolina and migrated around 1820 to Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee. John and Eliza had 10 children: Edward H., John Hendrickson, Mary, Eliza Louisa, Vincent Gary, Emelina, Caleb Starr, Henry McGarth, Francis Marion, and Charles Willis.

Under Family Tree Maker Reports & Trees (below) I have also added some family tree information on other branches of my family. Each of these families includes a descendent who married into the Ditmore family: J. Baetgin Heinrichson's daughter Eliza married John Ditmore; two of John M. Durham's granddaughters married into the Ditmore family -- Pernie O. Durham married George W. Ditmore Jr., and Lula Frances Durham married John Henry Ditmore; Edward Manery's daughter Mary married Vincent Gary Ditmore; John Caldwell's granddaughter Jane married George Washington Ditmore. For this reason this information will be of interest to many other Ditmore descendents who trace their ancestry through these same lines.

In July 2001 a 600+ page book entitled "The Ditmore Family History" was published on this family. A copy of the book is available for review in the genealogy division of the Allen County Public Library, 900 Webster Street, Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The book is not available through interlibrary loan.

There are several companies selling family crests or coat of arms that will gladly sell you a Ditmore Family Crest. Since the name Ditmore likely did not even exist until the 1600's it is most likely that the Ditmore family never had a coat of arms or family crest. We would caution anyone from accepting any claims regarding authenticity with anything but skepticism.

While gathering information on the Ditmore family it became apparent that we were a patriotic bunch and that more than a few from our family had served in our military over the years. Included here is information on the service of family members of which I have been made aware. I am sure there are many, many more who have fought and maybe even given their lives in service to our country. I’m sure if each soldier mentioned here had had the opportunity to tell their war stories, each one of their stories would have been fascinating to us all. At the end of this chapter is a first-hand account of one of our family members’ experiences at war. We owe a special debt of gratitude to all of these relatives.
