MY OWN GADSDENS : THOMAS ALFRED GADSDEN b 1839 emigrated to South Africa in 1863 married ELIZA ANN BELL (dau of Port Captain WILLIAM BELL) and established the Natal Gadsden family. Their children were WILLIAM, SYDNEY BARTLE, FAITH VIVIAN and HOPE GEORGINA GADSDEN. SYDNEY BARTLE was my grandfather; his only son (in fact, his only child) WILLIAM BELL GADSDEN, b 1910, was my father. My brother ROGER BELL GADSDEN is the last to carry the surname in this line.
Local shipping records reveal that THOMAS ALFRED GADSDEN arrived in Natal on 21 June 1863 on the barque PRISCILLA from London. She had sailed from Gravesend 31 March, and from the Downs 4 April 1863. The PRISCILLA, 253 tons, was commanded by George Brown, and carrying a general cargo. Passengers were listed as follows: Messrs. J. VINCENT, Herbert and Reginal (sic) BOWERS, and GADSDEN, Mrs. GREENING, son and dau. Handley & Dixon agents.

JOHN GADSDEN, Thomas's father, born 1794, married MARY ANN BONE (dau of JOHN BONE, Esq.,)at Hackney, London, in 1821. Later the family spent time in Waterford, Ireland. Another JOHN GADSDEN, Thomas Alfred's grandfather, born 1759, married PHOEBE HILL. This John was a Cheesemonger of Whitechapel and Bow.

"FAMOUS" GADSDENS INCLUDE: JOHN OF GADDESDEN who appears in the Prologue to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He was a priest and physician who wrote a treatise on medicine in the fourteenth century.
CHRISTOPHER GADSDEN was the leader of South Carolina radicals in the fight for American Independence. Christopher's father, THOMAS GADSDEN, who married in Barbados and lived there for a time, later became Collector of Customs at Charles Town South Carolina, circa 1720. There are numerous American GADSDEN descendants.
