Charles H. Dobbs

Information from Kenneth Carpenter, eldest son of Vera
Carpenter (Dobbs)

He was born in a house which was located on the present
site of the old Clio School. The house was later moved 2 or
3 blocks North on Mill St. to make room for the school, and
is now part of the old Jennings house. Evelyn and Owen were
born in this house. Vera Louisa was born in an apartment
located over the stores on Vienna St., which is the main
street of Clio. The children remember the occupations of
Charles Henry as that of Fire Chief of Clio, Town Marshal,
Logger on the Au Sable and other rivers of Michigan, a
dealer in Windmills, an Ice Cutter, (He cut ice for his
friend Dave Wing, and the ice house was on the South side
of the Mill Pond) and city of Clio worker. Charles was also
known and respected for his ability to play checkers over
the railroad telegraph systems, and his passion for playing
Cribbage. Charles Henry was a logger before his marriage to
Elfie, and afterwards he drilled wells and put up
windmills. The job took him away from home so much that he
went into Mason and Cement work.
