The Cobbs Hall Carving of the Lee Family Arms

The Cobbs Hall Carving of the Lee Family Arms
LEE Family: In 1682 John Gibbon, "Bluemantle Pursuivant" of the College of Arms in England, identified Colonel Richard Lee of Virginia as a member of the Lee family of Shropshire. This particular version of the Lee arms has been associated with the Cobb's Hall estate in Virginia, and has been used to support the premise that the American Lee family belongs to that family group. Although scholars have sought in vain to explain the connection (a vigorous attempt was made in Mr. William Thorndale's article in the National Genealogical Quarterly, Vol. 76, Dec. 1988), this theory has begun to fray to a certain degree. Mr. Thorndale suggested attachment to a family of weavers in Worcestershire, whose lineage has led away from the armigerous Lees of Shropshire. It would be advisable to watch for developments in new research. See Links: "Alan Nicholl's Home Page"
