Cyrus Sharpe Sloan - (ca. 1814 - 1848)
SLOAN FAMILY: Amanda Sloan married Ephraim Thomas Ragland in Lafayette, Macon Co., TN on 12 September 1852. Amanda was born in Clark Co., Illinois on 01 September 1832; she had two brothers: Cyrus Allen and Samuel H. Sloan, both of whom were born in Alabama. The identity of Amanda's father was long a mystery until the death certificate of Samuel H. Sloan confirmed his name as Cyrus and his mother as Flora Ann. Cyrus Sharpe Sloan's army enlistment for the Mexican War resides in the National Archives in Washington; the document confirms his birth place as Smith Co., TN, and his enlistment occurred in Limestone Co., AL on 15 May 1847, within two years of Samuel H. Sloan's birth. Cyrus also appears in the 1830 census of Clark Co., IL, within 2 years of Amanda's birth. Cyrus' presence in Illinois finds explanation in the presence of his kinsman and namesake, Cyrus Sharpe, his first cousin once removed, and a great-grandson of Archibald Sloan I. Cyrus Sharpe is prominent in the land records of Clark Co., IL. Census records indicate that both of Amanda Sloan Ragland's parents were born in Tennessee. Cyrus S. Sloan died from several infectious diseases that he contracted during the Mexican War; Flora Sloan and her 7 children obtained a land grant in Limestone Co., AL. Bounty Land Warrant #17895 issued to Flora Sloan on 9 June 1848 provides the names of all "the heirs at law of Cyrus S. Sloan deceased, late a private in Captain Higgins' Company thirteenth regiment United States Army."
