LOFTIS FAMILY - Our family has preserved an oral tradition of James Powell Loftis' flight from Atlanta during the Battle of Atlanta. The telling of this story includes the relation that when Federal troops overtook them, that an elder daughter cowered in the corner of a room in the abandoned farm house, cradling a young child, rocking it and concealing her eyes behind the brim of her bonnet so that she would not have to gaze upon the fearsome Yankee soldiers. The field commander addressed James Loftis and promised him that if the women would cooperate to make hoe-cakes of some available flour that the troops would depart and leave them unharmed, and not steal their livestock. The women complied with the request and formed cakes which they placed upon the griddle.Oral tradition says that the Yankee soldiers were so famished that they snatched the cakes off the griddle before they were fully cooked.Having secured the food, the troops departed, and as they did so, they drove away the livestock.James Loftis followed after them, and pled with the Captain to keep his word, which as an honorable man, he granted. After the war, they returned to Atlanta and resided there during the "reconstruction". - John Wilbur McDougal (1920 - 1944) (25 KB)

LEE Family: In 1682 John Gibbon, "Bluemantle Pursuivant" of the College of Arms in England, identified Colonel Richard Lee of Virginia as a member of the Lee family of Shropshire. This particular version of the Lee arms has been associated with the Cobb's Hall estate in Virginia, and has been used to support the premise that the American Lee family belongs to that family group.Although scholars have sought in vain to explain the connection (a vigorous attempt was made in Mr. William Thorndale's article in the National Genealogical Quarterly, Vol. 76, Dec. 1988), this theory has begun to fray to a certain degree.Mr. Thorndale suggested attachment to a family of weavers in Worcestershire, whose lineage has led away from the armigerous Lees of Shropshire. It would be advisable to watch for developments in new research.See Links: "Alan Nicholl's Home Page" - Richard Lee, the Founder(?- 1664) (15 KB)

Of all the sovereigns of Britain, King Charles II seems most inextricably tied to our family's history. While Prince Charles was still in exile after his father's execution, in the time frame of his departure for Scotland (2 June 1650), Richard Lee the Founder hired a Dutch Vessel and went to Breda in Netherlands where he surrendered Virginia governor Berkeley's commission for the government of the province to the exiled prince. This act was recorded in the 1682 volume "Introductio ad Latinam Blasoniam" by John Gibbon. In Scotlandhe was crowned Charles II at Scone, whereupon he obtained military support with intent to assault Cromwell's forces and drive them from power.Among his troops were several Munros: Hugh, John, Robert and William. After King Charles' defeat at the Battle of Worcester in September of 1651, these Munro kinsmen were placed upon a ship bound for New England as exiled political prisoners by Cromwell's forces.John Munro, the emigrant was the progenitor of the American Munro family noted in this web page. After King Charles' failed attempt to seize power, late in September, he fled to the south coast of England where he took up refuge in "Coaxden Hall" the manor home of the Cogan family in Dorsetshire.Suggested Reading: "Notes and Queries for Somerset and Dorset, Vol. III, " ed.
