I am researching all branches of my family: Norwegian, German, French-Canadian Metis. Much of the information is second hand, so I am trying to document as much as I can. On my paternal grandfather's side, I was lucky to receive a family history book from the HEFTE family reunion in the 50’s, which provided much of the information on the Norwegian branch of our family tree. This is the branch of the family that came from Gol Hallingdal, NORWAY to settle in (Caledonia) Minnesota and North Dakota. This is our link to the DOLLAR or (DAHLER) family. On my paternal grandmother's side to my great grandmother, we can only go back to her parents: Anna Magdalena BERGFRECHT born in Marner, Holstein, Kronprinzen, Koeg, GERMANY in 1854. She married Herman Peter BRUHN Jr. On my mother's side of the family, we can go back to Joseph COTE' who fathered Louis Cote' in 1846 (deceased 1890). This branch of the family traveled between MASSACHUSETTS and QUEBEC while their family grew. My maternal grandfather Jean Baptiste Napoleon Cote’ (changed to COTA by teachers) was fourth of eight children. His mother Marguerite CARTIER (dit la France) died in 1880 in North Dakota. My maternal grandmother, Marie-Anne Josephine MARION (called Josephine), was in large part Native American, although she would not admit to it. When she was young, she was sent to a convent school, where both her Indian blood and her speaking French were marks against her. Her Grandmother Angelique "Omanukwe" BOTTINEAU OUELLETTE raised my great-aunt Emma on the TURTLE MOUNTAIN reservation in North Dakota. The family settled in and around Quebec and North Dakota. I have recently received information with scrip application info and an entry on the Turtle Mountain Reservation Census – I am just not sure what to do with it to get a roll number. Her father Norman MARION was born in 1852 in WINNEPEG, Canada. I have very little information on this man. His father was Narcisse Maurice (Xavier) Marion married circa 1830 to Marie Rosalie Bouchard, Narcisse’s parents were Francois Marion and Lisette Martel (no other information.) Marie’s parents were Francois Richard and an unknown Cree woman. I am also trying to find information on my ex-husband's family for my son. They were not interested in this at all, and all records have been destroyed. My son is ROLLIE WRIGHT (the 4th!), and his grandmother's name was Carnation ALVES. Any info would be appreciated. I hope that someone, somewhere sees this and realizes that something sounds familiar. I have some documentation, but lots of names and dates were passed down orally. Any info that I have I would be happy to share. Happy Hunting! |
