Descendants of Patrick Donoghue

Generation No. 1

      1. Patrick1 Donoghue was born Abt. 1816 in Ireland, and died Aft. 1901 in Ireland. He married Mary Fitzgerald Bef. 1858. She was born Abt. 1816 in Ireland, and died Bef. 1901 in Ireland.

Notes for Patrick Donoghue:
7/16/1996
Research from Mallow Parish Centre say he was married 1846. But first child was born 1858. Most likely the wrong Patrick.

Review of the Griffith's Valuation Records of 1852 which shows the head of households. They may own it or be a renter. There were several Donoghue's in Glounthane parish but only one Patrick. He lived in the townland of Courtstown in Little Island. He appeared to be a farm laborer and lived in a dwelling on the land of a farmer named Catherine Cantillion. The value of the dwelling was 10 shillings and was probably a two room cottage with thatched roof. The map reference for 1852 was 8c. (I have a copy of the map) Patrick was probably a farm laborer and owned no land. He was a person living on the poverty line with very small wages.

He most likely is our ancestor.

Two earlier records were examined.
The House Book for Little Island Civil Parish (Not Roman Catholic Records). In 1848 Patrick Donoghue did not reside at the above location as it was occupied by a James Carroll. Also the Tithe Applotment Book for Little Island (civil) parish around 1830 which listed the inhabitants did not list any Donoghue's in the Little Island Parish.

Note: The Country of Ireland refereed to their subdivisions of counties as parishes. This is confusing as the Roman Catholic subdivisions of the dioceses were also called parishes. They did not always match in land layout.

During my visit to the National Library in Dublin I received invaluable help from Francis Carroll, Senior Library Assistant. He has been there for over 20 years.

I reviewed the microfilm for the Parish of Glounthane in the Diocese of Cloyne but did not get much information as it was difficult to read.

I found out the landlord Catherine Cantillion was not the owner. It was actually owned by William H. R. Jackson who may have lived in Paris, France.

During my visit to the Valuation Office in Dublin I was assisted by Patrick Gallagher who really knew how to read the books. I obtained the maps of the Donoghue, Moore and Daly residences in 1852. I also reviewed the orginial records for the following years to determined when they moved.

Patrick Donoghue resided in Courtstown in the map location 8c from 1852 until about 1894 when the new resident was Daniel Mahoney. Patrick lived there for about 40 years. His name appeared in the 1852, 1855, 1858, 1862, 1885 records.

When I arrived in Cork my first visit was to Sacred Heart Church were I met Father Kerry Murphy-O'Connor (Phone 021 4353195) who allowed me to look at the orginial parish records over a period of 10 hours in 4 days. And I didn't get threw them all. He gave me names of Sheehan's who still lived in the parish. I spoke to each of them and they have no records of their ancestors as their grandfather died early on. Based upon the records of where Patrick Donoghue lived in 1852 I believe two of the Sheehan's live on or close to that property. I also found information on my last day in Cork County Library that may prove they are related.

I reviewed most of the parish records of births from 1857 to 1865 and marriages from 1835 to1864. Other books not reviewed but available are Baptisms and Marriages from 1813 to 1825.
Missing records are Births from 1826 to 1857 and Marriages 1826 to 1833.

I found about 100 records that mentioned the Donoghue name. They ranged from births to marriages to being witnesses to them. I have a separate file for those records.

During my visit to the Cork County Library to review the 1901 census I found Patrick Donoghue at the age of 85 living with his daughter Hannah (Anna), her husband Patrick Sheehan and their 8 children in a two room cottage. Patrick was widowed and could not read according to the census.

Hanna indicated that she was 45 at the time of the census which is 3 years older than her birthday. (They say that many people can't remember exact dates.) The house they lived in was owned by Denis Cantillion.

One of their sons was Denis who was 18 in 1901. Mamie Sheehan indicated her grandfather was Denis and her father Timothy was born in March 1906. I plan to send her this information to see if this will link their family to ours.

The Sheehan I spoke to were Mamie (Sheehan) Mahoney (Phone:4353553) who lives in Courtstown, her sister Nula (Sheehan) Corconan (Phone: 4353488) who lives in Caherlag just north of Courtstown and their brother DiDi Sheehan (Phone: 4354136) who I believe lives in the orginial home which has been renovated over the years.

The other name give to me by Father Kerry was Michael O'Donoghue (Phone: 021 4821679) who owned a local bar in Knockraha just north of Courtstown. I tried to visit with him on Saturday night but he was out of town. I tried calling latter in the weekend but there was no answer. Father Kerry informed me that he found out that Michael came to the parish long after the Donoghue's time period in the parish.

Also, during my visit I went to the O'Donoghue Pub, Drawbridge St., Cork. Talked with the wife of owner. She indicated that a full research of the O'Donoghue was done by Robert (Bobby) O'Donoghue of Inch. He is an elderly man and a writer. I tried to locate him but to no avail. Will continue to research. She indicated that all O'Donoghue's came from County Kerry.
