Notes for Daniel Joseph Donahue:
11/20/2000
Why I went to Ireland. Because I have always wanted to go. My wife Linda and I decided to go for our 20th anniversary so we made plans. Of course we had to negotiate how much touring and family research we were going to do. As we were going for 6 days we decide on 3 days each. As time got closer Linda's mom got ill and Linda was not able to go. I almost backed out but Linda convinced me to go so I did. Guess what I did- researched for 6 days. I owe her big time.

Day 1 Thursday
Upon arrival at 6:00AM I immediately drove to Dublin from Shannon Airport (About 3 hours). Tired and lack of sleep I re-learned real quick how to drive a standard and drive on the opposite side of the road. Once getting to Dublin it took me an hour or so to find the National Library due to missed turns and traffic.

Once at the library I met Francis Carroll who is Senior Library Assistant and been there for about 20 years. He was very helpful in sending me in the right direction. The system can be overwhelming. You need to know certain things before you can do research. Thank goodness I had some information beforehand. But still you need to lookup the conversion of Catholic Dioceses to Civil Parishes to find the Catholic Parish microfilm if they have it and then hope you can read it. After getting the lay of the land I decided to find a place to stay and come back the next day for real research. Well the place I stayed at was only a half hour drive but it took an hour and a half because of the pouring rain, missed turns and directions ( I think some Irish people like to send people off in the wrong direction.).

Day 2 Friday
The next day I went back to the National Library and did some research and didn't come up with much. I was told that the records for the Sacred Heart Church were not in existent by the Genealogist I hired but I found them at the Library. The microfilm was difficult to read (I had a bad machine they said) but I could not find the record of Michael Donoghue birth. Due to time constraint I could only spend a couple of hours there but I am sure if I had more time I would have found more information.

I then went to the Valuation Office to look up record of were Patrick Donahue, Patrick Moore and Michael Daly who was Patrick Moore's father in law lived in 1852. I received this information from the research I had done by Paul MacCotter before I went. I was able to get maps as to were all three lived during the mid 1800's and all I had to do was compare it to current maps.

Well time was running out and I had to drive to Cork that day. I stayed in Dublin until 5:00PM doing research but should have left earlier (recommended by everyone). It was only 120 miles and by our standards 2 to 3 hour drive. Guess what it took almost 6 hours. First it was a Friday night, second it was a Holiday Weekend and Cork was hosting a International Jass Festival and finally the roads. It was like driving on a two lane back road (most of the way) with traffic like the LA Freeway at 50 to 60 miles per hour.

Day 3 Saturday
After a good night sleep. I headed off to find the birth place of Michael Donoghue. Sacred Heart Church is located in Glounthaune (Glounthane) Parish, Courtstown townland, Little Island, County Cork, Ireland. Surprisingly I found the church very easily. Of course when you see a church that is over 100 years old there is a good shot it's the right one. Stopped in the church and they were preparing for a wedding between a Irish man and an American woman who decide to get married in Ireland. I asked their names just in case they were relatives. They were not.

I went over to the rectory and met Father Kerry Murphy-O'Connor and asked if he had any records I could look at. He said he did to my surprise but due to the fragile and historic value of them he said he had to view them with me. When he found out how much I wanted to review he decide to leave me alone as he was a very busy priest. He allowed me to review the records for about 10 hours over the next four days.

Well I found Michael's baptism day of December 29, 1861 but not in date order. It seems that the priest of the times would make a record of the event but may not have entered it into the bound record book until some time later. His birth was listed after the March 1862 births. This may not be his actual birth date but it is his baptismal day which is usually within a couple of days of birth back then. Found 32 additional records of Donoghue's in the records from births to marriages. Only two that I can tie to the family. There were over a 100 records that had names that were in my records before going to Ireland but I don't know how they relate. Such names as Sheehan (Anna Donahue husbands name), Curtin ( my great grandmother's family name) and other names like Fitzgerald, Riordon and Mahony.

The two records I can tie to the family are Hanna Donoghue born February 26, 1859 and later married Patrick Sheehan. The other person was a Mary Donoghue born January 17, 1858. Both had the same parents as Michael. This is the first time that anything was mentioned of a third child. Father Kerry believes that she may have died with in the first year. He says this because Hanna record was more difficult to read and it looked like Mary also. He indicated that it was a custom to name the next child after the child who passed away. Hanna could have been her middle name and she was referred to as Anna in other information I have.

Father Kerry gave me names of O'Donoghue and Sheehan still living in the parish. Michael O'Donoghue owned a pub in Knockraha so I went for a visit. He was not around and tried to call him later in the week but there was no answer. Father Kerry later told me he came after our family time period so I didn't follow up.

Headed back to Blarney in the hopes of getting a good meal. But if you don't go to a restaurant by eight in the fall you just don't get those famous Irish meals. So I went to the local pub for pub food. As I said earlier there was a jazz festival on in Cork so all you hear was jazz music. The local hotel had the Bourbon Street Jazz Band from New Orleans playing there all weekend. The festival is one of the top 10 in the world I was told.

Day 4 Sunday
I stayed in Blarney just outside of Cork and it is famous for the Blarney Castle, the Blarney Stone (kissing the Blarney Stone is supposed to give you the gift of gab) and Blarney Mills Store. Well I was given a list of things to buy from Linda so that is what I did in the morning. Never got to kiss the Blarney Stone or visited the Castle, (To busy researching, next time)

I went back to do more research at the rectory and called the Sheehan. Although they don't have records or recollection of their relatives I believe they are related for two reasons. Two of them live on the same property that Patrick Donoghue lived on until 1894 and information I found when reviewing the 1901 Ireland Census.

Took a ride up to Rathcormac about 20 miles north of Cork to check out the Moore side of the family. Was not able to connect with the parish priest but made an appointment for Tuesday morning. Visited the local church and the orginal church which is now in ruins. Checked out the local cemetery but could not find anything. The headstones were made of limestone back then and they are difficult to read.

Set out to find were Patrick Moore lived based upon the maps I got in Dublin. I was able to find the gate house of Kildinan and took pictures. It was a large estate at that time and Patrick was probably a laborer on the estate. Tried locating the home of Michael Daly (father in law to Patrick) but could not find the exact location.

Headed back to Cork to visit another O'Donoghue Pub (only two in the area). Talked to the owners wife and she told me of a Robert O'Donoghue who did a family research on the O'Donoghue. She told me he lived in Inch and told me everyone knew him.

Day 5 Monday
Today was the Holiday so not much to do research wise. So I drove around Little Island. In the 1800's it was a farming community but now a days it is mostly industrial. The property that Patrick Donoghue lived on until 1894 still has housing on it and that is were the Sheehan live now. On the island is an old cemetery that is in ruins with a small church. The current Sacred Heart Church was built in 1901 so the church that our relatives were baptized was a small church closer to the water and it was called the Key Church. This is where the local boats would stop by for a blessing on their way to go fishing or to Cohb were many sailed from during the famine.

Went by Caherlag Cemetery were most likely are relatives are buried and did find some stones with Donoghue inscriptions on them. This cemetery is also over grown with grass and weeds as this cemetery is hardly used. (Boy if I only had my gas powered weed wacker.)

Went looking for the home of Robert O'Donoghue in Inch which is east of Cork put was not able to find it. It seems there are two Inch and I went to the wrong one. But, I finally got to see the rolling green hills of Ireland, painted sheep (They paint them so they know who owns them) and the ocean. Buy the way the roads get narrower out in the country you got to watch out for tractors in the road. (That's another story)

Finally got my Irish meal. They server a very large boiled potato and french fries with my lamb dinner.

Day 6 Tuesday (Last day in Cork)
Went up to Rathcormac to look at the Moore records. To my surprise all the records have been compiled into a computerized database some time ago. So all I was able to look at were these records. It verifies most of the info I have and found a few records I didn't have.

Well you know when you travel to the homeland you got to bring home something for your brothers and sisters. And I wanted it to be different, something to remind them of Ireland, so I search high and low and got them the perfect gift. In Rathcormac, the home of the Moore's there is a company that makes lawn ornaments so I bought them little leprechauns. The problem is they are made of cement. Now the problem was to get them home. I found a solution as I was driving to the airport the next day. I found a blue and red plastic crate at the local hardware store. They all fit in perfectly and made it home safely. Of course when Linda picked me up at the airport she thought I was just coming over to America for the first time with my taped up blue and red crate.

Because of the Moore records being computerized I had extra time so I drove back to Cork to research the 1901 census. This is were I found my great great grandfather Patrick, at the age of 85, living with his daughter Hannah (Anna) and her husband Patrick and their eight children in a two room cottage. One of their children was Denis (age 18) who could be the grandfather of the Sheehan's who live on the property that Patrick lived until 1894.

Well they threw me out of the County Cork Library because it was closing time. Now I had to drive 90 mile to Shannon to get my plane home the next day. Got there about 9 PM but was determined to hear some Irish music. So the owners of the bed and breakfast I was staying at sent me to Durty Nelly's for food and song. Both were great.

Conclusion
If you get a chance to go to Ireland, Go. Linda and I are going back, now all we have to do is negotiate how much sight seeing and family research were going to do.
