                        Carrolton, Ala Nov. 30, 1866
To: Mr. Thos. J, McCafferty
                        Dear Sir

      I take the Priviledged opportunity this morning to communicate to you that we are all well hoping of a speedy reception of the above letter & find you in the enjoyment of the same. I rec'd your kind letter while at macon Miss. I judged from the tone of your letter that you would not remain at Macon very long and & therefore I though (sic) it best not to try to get to Macon & another thing was your kind letter was very old by the time it reached me. i would of gave anything in the world if you had of visited me & I shall always think hard of you for it. For there is no man any (illegible) to receive his friends than I am you. I will roceed to give you a little History of some of my relations. My fathers name was Thomas Mccafferty He lived in Union Dist S C. He had but one brother & his name was Jack. Uncle Jack had four sons. The eldest was Thomas the second Jack and the other two Bird and Green. Uncle jack also had 2 daughters. Eldest was Polley & married a Manley the name of (illegible)? the other was Patsy she married a man by the name of McCorgle a Baptist Preacher. My name is William & I have 3 sons & 4 daughters. My sons name is Robert, Volley & John. When get a letter from you I will give you a full history of all the communication as for as I know. I want you to write me soon & give me a history as far as you know. I well know we are related. Please write soon & give me all the news of your country for I am very anxious to hear from you one more time. I would of written soon but the letters would not go. But now we have a Post master & can send letters.

Oct-Nov 1834 Thomas McCafferty & wife Hannah, convey to their daughter Eleanor all land, animals & furniture. wit: J.H. Rodgers A.P. Barnett.

It is believed that Ellen was not married at the time of Charles' birth in 1833 in Union County, in 1835 she moved to Pickens County, AL then to Choctaw County, MS in 1848.
