Killed in Aircraft Accident
Advice has been received by Mr R.C. Donaldson of Union Street North Brighton of the death of his third son, Sgt-Pilot John Donaldson RAAF (aged 23) as a result of an aircraft accident at Lavington, England on Wednesday. Sgt-Pilot Donaldson, who was born in Calcutta where his father was engaged in the jute business came to Melbourne when aged 4 or 5. He was educated at Brighton Grammar School and later at Scotch College, where he finished a brilliant school course by obtaining leaving honors, a senior scholarship and an exhibition in French, tenable at Ormond College. He joined the literary staff of THE ARGUS in 1935 and while engaged in financial journalistic work was successful in passing sections of B.Com and Diploma of Journalism at the University of Melbourne. After serving in the Militia he joined the RAAF in June 1940. He arrived in England in August 1941 and up to the time of his death had been flying Spitfires and giving instruction on fighter flying. His eldest brother, Sgt-Pilot Donald Donaldson RAAF is also in England.
