".....Kirton is a market town and parish in the "hundred of Corringham and division of Lindsey" 147 miles north of London, 18 miles north of Lincoln and 10 miles north east of Gainsborough, pleasantly situated near the summit and on the western side of a commanding eminence and belonging to the Dukedom of Cornwall (now "owned" by Prince Charles?) ...."

"...Immigrated with 6 children from Shearwood in the parish of Basford near Nottingham to Australia Felix in Marshals Emergrant ship the "John Bull" commanded by Captain Orman. Left Graves End September 28, 1839 and anchored in Hobson's Bay, Melbourne, 23 January, 1840..."

From "Shipping Arrivals and Departures Victorian Ports 1798-1845" (pub 1984) Martin A Syme,
21 January 14 February, 1840, "John Bull" 705 tons, Captain Ormond. Left London 22 September, 1839 via Bombay. 233 emigrants, 20 cabin, merchandise. No further record of the "John Bull" ever returning to Melbourne.

Note: 705 tons was a large ship for the day and the vessel is described as a "ship" not a "bark" or "brig". This arrival was only 4 years after the settlement of Port Phillip (Melbourne) by Batman, Evans and Fawkner ! The largest vessels were a 1,000 tonnes (rare) and the average about 5-600 tonnes; the journey taking about 3-4 months. Arrival in the winter would have been most uncomfortable.

"....The ship "John Bull" 725 tons arrived with the first shipment of "bounty emigrants', 89 males, 99 females and 31 children. The total bounty paid was Ł3,441. As well 23 males 11 females and 13 children arrived as passengers. The bounty was Ł38 for each married man and his wife under 40 years, Ł5 for each child under 5 years, Ł10 for each child 7-15 years and Ł15 for each child between 15-30 years. Preference was given to those who had trades and probably John Barnby, being a Joiner, would have come out on this basis....?"

At the end of 1838 Melbourne's population was approximately 4,000 and houses estimated at 700-800. WILLIAMSTOWN where the Barnby Marris' first settled was named after King William 1V. Melbourne after the British Prime Minister. The first edition of "The Herald" was published on 3 January, 1840, 20 days before the family arrived. Local mail delivery commenced 2 March 1840, cost 1 penny per item. John Barnby Marris's portrait is held at the Latrobe Library, Melbourne as an early pioneer, (no 171)

In 1872 T.F.Chuck, a well-known photographer, made a large mosaic of explorers and early colonists of Victoria. He photographed surviving Victorian residents, borrowed negatives of settlers who had died before this date, and copied a painting of Lieutenant-Governor, CJ Latrobe. Chuck had a studio in Melbourne from 1863 to 1876.

In 1851 living in dwelling house in Bourke Street & also on the electoral roll for that year.

In 1867 signed "Loyal Address to Duke of Edinburgh" (signed 16th page from beginning of address)
