Notes for JARVIS SEALE:

In his sworn statement before the Orphans Court of Greene County, Alabama on the 19th day of June 1835, Jarvis Seale stated that he was born in March 1759 in Prince William County, Virginia.

That he entered the service of the United States in October, 1777, at which time he resided in Prince William County in the state of Virginia near what was formerly well known as the "Red House" where Haymarket now stands.

That he was drafted, as a private, into the company commanded by Captain John Seale and marched under him toward Philadelphia, but that Capt. Seale soon resigned, when Lieutenant Brown took command and retained it until the company was discharged. He was drafted for a tour of two months but was in actual service nearly three.

That he was discharged with the rest of the company near Philadelphia, just before General Washington retired to his winter quarters in Valley Forge.

That he entered the service a second time, in the fall of 1780, as a substitute for William Jemison, in the company commanded by Captain John Brett, in which William Farrow was Lieutenant, and Solomon Ewell, Ensign; that he entered for a period of three months but was not discharged until in March, 1781, after a term of service of nearly five months, during which time he served as a private.

He had at the same time a brother named John Seale in the company of light horse under the command of Capt. Armstrong, under Col. Washington.

Interrogatories put to Jarvis Seale and answered show that since the Revolution he lived in Georgia, East Tennessee, West Tennessee and since 1818 in Greene County, Alabama.

She was born Abt. 1835 in MS and died Bef. 1900 in Kemper Co., MS.

Notes for JARVIS SEALE:

The first known record of Jarvis Seale, son of Eli, was on 16 July 1841. On this date, when he was about eighteen years of age, he signed a document , which read as follows:

Gaston, Ala. 16th July 1841. Received of James Anderson Executor of the Estate of Jarvis Seale Deceased formerly of Green County, Ala. Five Hundred and Fifty Three Dollars in full for my part of the said Estate I being one of the legatees of the said Jarvis Seale Deceased.

Witness (Signed) Eli Seale

A. W. Daly By Jarvis Seale

Jarvis Seale left Kemper Co., Miss. and went to Neshoba Co. where he married Lovy Jones. Records in Neshoba County indicate Jarvis and his family remained there until after 08 May 1857. He was back in Kemper Co. by 02 June 1858, Neshoba Co., Miss. Deed Book K., p. 296. The 1860 Kemper census shows Jarvis and his family living in the household of Dr. R. Silimon and his wife and Dr. S. W. Campbell.

Jarvis enlisted in Co. I, 5th Reg’t Mississippi State Troops at Scooba, Miss. on 16 Aug. 1862, by H. C. Chambers as a private. On 27 Feb. 1863 he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and later promoted to Captain. Most of his time was spent working at a hospital in Columbus, Miss. The Official Confederate Military Records on file in the Department of Archives and History in Jackson, Miss. show that Jarvis was born in 1823 in Green Co., Ala., that his occupation was a farmer and that his residence at the time of enlistment was at Gainsville Junction, Kemper Co., Miss. Note: Gainsville Junction was a junction of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and a Tram Railroad which went to Gainsville, Ala. Gainsville Junction later became known as Narkeeta and was about a mile north of the future town of Enondale. ATS

On or about 04 June 1881, Jarvis and his step son-in-law, Edward Franklin Parker, bought 368 acres of land with 25 bales of cotton. This land was about three miles east of Blackwater Baptist Church on highway 39 in Kemper Co., MS. Jarvis lived on this land where his home was described as having the biggest fireplace ever seen. He also had what today would be described as a carport where he parked his buggy.

The date of death of Jarvis is not known. His grave was not marked until the 1980’s. A receipt, which I have in my possession states: Enondale, Kemper Co., Miss. Due Jarvis Seale sixty dollars and fifty cents borrowed money which I promise to pay by Nov. 15, 1897. This the 20 day of March 1897. Signed: R. P. Horton: N. Y. Horton. This is the last known record of Jarvis Seale and he is believed to have died later that year. ATS

Notes for LOVY JONES:

Lovy Jones Seale was the oldest child of James and Sarah Jones. She was born in Alabama in 1826 or early 1827. Neshoba County, MS Deed Book M., p. 443 shows Jarvis Seale and Lovy Seale, his wife, selling land to William Jarvis Seale as heirs at law of James Jones, deceased. This deed was dated 26 Dec. 1865. This is the last known record of Lovy Jones Seale. She evidently died sometime after this date and before 1870. Family tradition indicates Lovy Seale was buried in the Seale Family Cemetery in Kemper County. However, the Seale family did not own this land until 29 Dec. 1886 when John W. Seale and Eli Seale bought this land from Columbia Hopson, Deed Book D., p. 396, Kemper Co., MS. Perhaps Dr. R. Silimon owned this land and Jarvis and Lovy Seale were still living in his household, as they were in 1860, when Lovy died. There are three graves together in the cemetery, Jarvis Seale, Martha Chambers Robinson Seale, and possibly Lovy Seale.

Notes for WINNIE ELIZABETH SEALE:

Winnie Elizabeth Seale married Armstead Daniels who was a brother to Ella Daniels. They probably married in Kemper Co., MS and the records were lost due to a fire. Winnie Elizabeth and Armstead Daniels went to Texas after 1910. Correspondence with relatives in MS indicated Winnie married a Mr. Hale as her second husband. Winnie and Armstead Daniels were living in District 2, Kemper County, MS. No children were shown on the 1910 census.

Notes for ELVIS ARMSTEAD DANIEL:

Armstead Daniels was probably a son of James Daniels born about 1835 in Ga. and his wife, Eliza, born about 1846 in MS.

Marriage Notes for WINNIE SEALE and ELVIS DANIEL:

Armstead Daniels was a brother to Ella Daniels who married her brother, Walter.

24. WILLIAM H.3 SEALE (ELI2, JARVIS1) was born Abt. 1825 in Greene Co., AL. He married ELIZABETH PILGRIM. She was born Abt. 1830.

Notes for WILLIAM H. SEALE:

William H. Seale enlisted in Co. A., 35th Mississippi Infantry at DeKalb, MS. on 26 Feb 1862. Confederate records show that he was attached to French’s Division Hospital at Lauderdale, Miss. on 04 Oct. 1863 as a patient. He was then attached to Breckteridge’s Division Hospital No. 2 at Lauderdale Springs, Miss. on 16 Dec. 1863 as a patient. The records do not state the reason why he was in the hospital.

The 1850 Neshoba Co., MS Census, page 271, dwelling 288, family 304, shows the wife of William Seale to be Clarinda. He had one son, Jarvis, age 7 months.

He apparently moved back to Kemper Co., MS before 1860 and is shown on the 1860 Kemper Census on page 93, dwelling 643, family 643. His wife is shown as Elizabeth. It is not known if Clarenda and Elizabeth was the same person or if perhaps William was married twice. Older family members stated that the wife of William was Elizabeth Pilgrim.

William H. Seale survived the Civil War and was shown on the 1866 and 1869 tax roll in Kemper Co., MS. He owned land near his father, Eli. He was not shown on the 1870 Kemper Census and no records have been found after 1869. It is likely that he moved to Texas or Arkansas about the time several members of the family left Kemper County.

William occasionally got himself in trouble. One day when he was left to look after the younger children while his stepmother was away from home he cut off the long shoulder length hair of his half sister Nancy Yarborough Seale. He was severely scolded when her mother returned. This and other stories about William were told to me by Mamie Harrington Banks, granddaughter of Nancy Y. Seale Horton. ATS

Children of WILLIAM SEALE and ELIZABETH PILGRIM are:

i. JARVIS4 SEALE, b. Abt. 1849.

ii. JOHN SEALE, b. Abt. 1851.

iii. MARY E. SEALE, b. Abt. 1854.

iv. ANN SEALE, b. Abt. 1856.

25. ELIZABETH3 SEALE (ELI2, JARVIS1) was born Abt. 1828 in Greene Co., AL and died Bef. 1879 in Kemper Co., MS. She married (1) JOHN W. HARPER Bef. 1850 in Kemper Co., MS. (?). He was born Abt. 1819 in GA and died October 07, 1862. She married (2) HUTCHINS BURTON Aft. 1862. He was born Abt. 1805 in VA and died July 09, 1883 in Ark.

Notes for ELIZABETH SEALE:

Mamie Harrington Banks said there were two Harper sons that went to Texas. I have no record of these two sons. It is likely the two Harpers that went to Texas were younger brothers of John W. Harper. A letter from Wesley Y.Seale dated 01 Oct. 1870; Navarro Co., Texas mentions Thomas and William Harper. These are believed to be sons of Wilkins and Mary Rivers Harper. Also, family members passed down information that two Harper children died as the result of having been given the wrong medication. This may have been Louisa and another unidentified child.

It is not known when Elizabeth "Betty" Burton died or where she was buried. Stories passed down by family members suggest that she died in Kemper Co., MS. and likely was buried in Mt. Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery. Before 1870 several family members started to Texas. When they arrived at the Mississippi River, an argument erupted with some members of the party having decided they wanted to go to Arkansas. Betty wanted to go to Texas and her second husband, Hutchins Burton, wanted to go to Arkansas. Betty, her daughter and son in law Robert Burton returned to Kemper County, MS while Hutchins Burton continued on to Arkansas. In 1870 Betty was living with her daughter and son-in-law in Kemper County according to the 1870 Census. Further, Maude Harrington Robinson and Mamie Harrington Banks stated that Eli Seale attended the funeral of his daughter at Mt. Hebron Church and that he never went back. Since all the other daughters of Eli buried at Mt. Hebron survived him; the funeral must have been that of Betty. There is an unmarked grave in front of what is believed to be the graves of children of her brother, Wesley Y. Seale.

Notes for JOHN W. HARPER:

Notes for WESLEY Y. SEALE:

Mount Hebron Methodist Episcopal Church South was established in southeast Kemper County, Mississippi by 05 June 1848. The present deed (2000) to land owned by the church was signed on 31 December 1856. Wesley Y. Seale is shown on the deed as being one of five trustees. Wesley Y. Seale had five children that died in Kemper County to include a twin son and daughter. These children are believed to have been buried in the church cemetery. Five graves are in a row with other family members and were marked with rocks. These graves are likely those of his children.

The following is a letter from Wesley Y. Seale to William Judson Horton who married his half sister, Nancy Yarborough Seale.

John has made two trips to the Saw mills 75 miles he brought 1,000 feet of lumber at a load. You think that is pretty light but you must remember we don’t feed our teams any and they keep fat. I intend to make my arrangement to go to Miss next faul. Tell Jarvis for the sake of his children that are growing up to leave that old hill if he don’t like this country on account of timber it is not far to where there is timber and this is on his way don’t be afraid you will starve. People are giving one dollar per hundred for picking cotton in Gold or 20 dollars per month. I can get steers as large as those I sold when I left there for 10 dollars a yoke. Thos Harper and Ford are at my house today they are well Tom is gathering corn he will make some 400 bushels corn and I think 4 or 5 bales cotton. We have 4,400 pounds cotton out Wineford picked 86 by dinner the other day. Bill Harper and family are well. Bill has some 50 head of horses and as many cows and he has bin here but three years. Give my love to all and believe me to be as ever yours. W. Y. Seale

41. REV. WILEY THOMAS4 SELBY (MARY JANE3 SEALE, ANTHONY2, JARVIS1) was born October 14, 1859 in Kemper Co., MS and died August 24, 1941 in Kansas City, MO. He married LUCY ANN TAYLOR November 30, 1885 in Maddisonville, KY. She was born October 18, 1863 in Near Durham, NC and died September 10, 1935 in Kansas City, Mo.

Notes for REV. WILEY THOMAS SELBY:

After leaving Kemper County Mississippi for personal reasons, Wiley Thomas Selby changed his name. He is shown in various records as both Wiley Talbert Selby and Wiley Tolbert Selby. Family tradition indicates that he was married twice. If true, the name of his first wife is not known. An unidentified photograph in the possession of Thomas Earl Roberts may have been a photograph of his first wife. A son, Bishop Selby, was not shown in the Bible Record of Wiley Selby. Willard Lowell Selby identified this son, brother, in a photograph.

The Methodist Church, Southwest Missouri Conference, Page 188 and 189.

WILEY TOLBERT SELBY

Wiley Tolbert Selby was born near DeKalb, Mississippi, the youngest child of twelve children; to pioneer Southern parents John H. and Mary Selby, on the 14th day of October 1859. He died in Kansas City, Missouri, August 23, 1941, aged 81 years and 10 months.

On the 30th day of November 1885, he was united in marriage to Lucy Ann Taylor, and to them was born three children, Lillian, Ira and Willard. Immediately upon their marriage they came to Arkansas to begin, not only their new home life but also likewise the life of the ministry, and settled on the Ellsworth Circuit in the Arkansas Conference. After their pastorate on this pioneer circuit, they went as home missionaries into the Indian Territory and began work among the Indians in the new country. Here they labored for three years, and then took up pastoral work in Kansas. Then back to Arkansas, and then in 1916 to Missouri, where for nine years, until his retirement in 1925, they served Wayland, Brookfield, Carthage. In each place they glorified and magnified their Lord, and like him "went about doing much good."

Mrs. Selby was in poor health much of this time, and for a considerable period, Brother Selby had to give up his active preaching in order to care for her, and finally in 1925, he took the retired relation altogether, so that he might have larger opportunity of assisting in the home. In 1935 Mrs. Selby died and Brother Selby continued to live with his daughter in Kansas City.

He held his quarterly conference relations with the Linwood Methodist Church. Mills M. Anderson conducted the funeral services; District Superintendent, and Edwin R. Hartz, assistant pastor of Linwood, and burial was beside his wife in the beautiful Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City. Today "His works do follow him." Wherever he and his good wife serves in the ministry of the Lord.

Mills M. Anderson

Seal was born near Livingston, Alabama and died at his house in Yazoo County, MS in 1889. Both are buried in the cemetery at Wesley Chapel Church in Phoenix, Miss. To them were born twelve children in Kemper County, MS. I am the youngest and the only living child.

Wiley Tolbert Selby

Kansas City, Mo. 1931

The family cemetery in Kemper County is at old Enon Church about 16 miles east of DeKalb, MS, on the DeKalb and Livingston highway near the little town of Enondale and near the Mobile and Ohio railroad. The Selby farm and the old Delk farm lay on each side of this railroad just south of this highway. The Selby farm on the West Side. The children of Lizzie Selby Roberts live about three miles south of Enondale on the old Berry Roberts farm. The children of D. H. and W. C. Selby live near Phoenix, MS. My father had one brother in Miss. at Newton, Miss. The rest of family was in N. C. His brother Tolbert Selby died in Raleigh, NC and in his will left father $500, which his children received after father’s death.

Note: The brother of John H. Selby in Newton, MS was Seth Ethridge Selby who married Lucy E. Simmons in Sumter Co., AL.
