Please note: The family trees have been removed as they contained inaccurate information. We will be posting updated trees in the near future. One main erroneous fact was that Jesse Doars was married to Elizabeth Meyers. If you have used this information in your trees, please contact us for the correction.
We have been searching our family history for some 35 years now. There are more than 3000 names in our Tree although not all of them appear here. There are over 90 spellings of the Dores name (many listed below) and even in our branch of the family tree there have been more than 10 variations, so we can never quite eliminate the possibility of other variations without confirmation of records. The most common and consistent spelling is DORES, DOERS, and DOARS.
DORES NAME Variations include but are not limited to:
Deures, Doares, DOARS, Doares, Doeer, Doeers, Doer, Doeres, Doerez, Doerr, Doerrs, DOERS, Doerz, Doheres, Dohers, Dohres, Dohray, Dohrays, Dohrez, Dohrey, Dohry, Door, Dooher, Doores, Dooris Doors, Doory, Dorais, Dore, Doree, Dorehes, Dorees, DORES, Doress, Dorey, Dorez, Dorhs, Doriah, Doris, Dorrees, Dorres, Dorria, Dorries Dorris, Dors, Dorse, Dory, Dours, Doures, Douris. Most of the other variations are the result of mispelling, recordkeeping, transcription, and other associated errors, and occur quite consistently. If we were to include foreign variations and accents the name grows to more than 300 variations.
We are most likely NOT related to the Dorris families in Virgina, or those with a Dore spelling of French descent, nor to those Dores with a Spanish and Portuguese origin because of the original DOARS spelling. There is a possiblility we are related to DOARS in Pensslyvania or even Bermuda as it was unlikely Jefse Doars was an only child or had no brothers or sisters or that his parents arrived alone in North America, and we are definitley related to many DOERS in Wisconsin.
We know that some of the family originally spoke a Germanic language, attended German speaking Methodist churches and married, Loyalist and Hessian families with German ties.
We have traced and confirmed our branch of "Dores" back to Jesse Dores (JEFSE DOARS)born around 1785 Dave's gggGrandfather. Although originally born in the US he may have been born in Virginia. He deserted from the US Army during the War of 1812!
We found his naturalization record for Canada in 1828. To be naturalized he would have been in Canada for a minumum of 7 years,(actually 1816-1818 [from 1842 Canadian Census])and not been born in England, Ireland, Scotland Wales or the British Colonies including Australia.
In 1823 Jesse married Elizabeth Lloyd(whose mother Mary Cline married Gotlieb Lloyd/Loede/Leode of Hessian descent and were one of the first three family pioneers of Gananoque Ontario in 1785.)and with her had 7 children. In the 1842 Census Jesse and the family were in Frontenac County in Ontario, with all 7 children. In 1848-9, daughter Hannah married John Wesley Ruttan (her older sister Phoebe had previously married John's brother Christopher Ruttan.) In the 1851 Census Elizabeth(widow) lived with son Granville, and daughters Elizabeth and Magaret in James Dores' house in Haldmand County, Rainham Township. In about 1855 James, and Hannah(Hess)and her sister Charity (Hess) and husband Daniel Gallagher, moved to Westminter Twp in South Western Ontario where they had 8 children. James' 4 sons each had a family bible with Dores records circa 1890. Two of those Bibles have so far been located, and one restored. James mother Elizabeth, with sibblings Elizabeth and Granville, and James younger brother Jesse with spouse Elizabeth (Null), and their 5 children Catherin Mary Elizabeth Amos and Byantha all moved to Wisconsin, where James sister Elizabeth marrried William Henry Harrison Woodin, and Granville married Jennie DuMez
Jesse Sr.'s son and grandson both named Jesse lived in Wisconsin along with siste
