Kathryn Keough Doran, a widow, emigrated to the USA from County Carlow, Ireland in abt. 1857-1859, with her children John, James, and Johanna, to "Oconto, Wisconsin", where she was said to have "many relatives in the area". (See short bibliography for her son James' family). The following account suggests Kathryn lived in the Milwaukee area.

The following is related by Dr. Edward W. Hayes (youngest son of Kathryn's daughter Joanna) in a privately published bibliography.

"Page 1
The Early Years

I was born and grew up as the youngest of seven children on a farm in a newly developed, rough part of Minnesota, a day's drive with a team of horses and a lumber wagon from the town of Rochester, then a small farmer's trading post and now the location of the renowned Mayo Clinic.

My father was born in St. Louis, Missourt. He was brought up the Mississippi River in his early youth to the area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He spent most of his boyhood working at odd jobs, principally for the Wisconsin lumber camps as they existed in those days. In his late teens he did have the privilege of attending school for a year in Milwaukee.

My mother, when she was fourteen years old, with her two younger brothers was brought to this country by her widowed mother who located in this same area in southern Wisconsin. Mother was born on a farm in Ireland and had very little schooling there and none after coming to this country."
