Kathryn Keough Doran, a widow, emigrated to the USA from County Carlow, Ireland in abt. 1857-1859, with her children John, James, and Johanna, to "Oconto, Wisconsin", where she was said to have "many relatives in the area". (See short bibliography for her son James' family). The following account suggests Kathryn lived in the Milwaukee area.

The following is related by Dr. Edward W. Hayes (youngest son of Kathryn's daughter Joanna) in a privately published bibliography.

"Page 1
The Early Years

I was born and grew up as the youngest of seven children on a farm in a newly developed, rough part of Minnesota, a day's drive with a team of horses and a lumber wagon from the town of Rochester, then a small farmer's trading post and now the location of the renowned Mayo Clinic.

My father was born in St. Louis, Missourt. He was brought up the Mississippi River in his early youth to the area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He spent most of his boyhood working at odd jobs, principally for the Wisconsin lumber camps as they existed in those days. In his late teens he did have the privilege of attending school for a year in Milwaukee.

My mother, when she was fourteen years old, with her two younger brothers was brought to this country by her widowed mother who located in this same area in southern Wisconsin. Mother was born on a farm in Ireland and had very little schooling there and none after coming to this country."

Dear Mr Doran

There was an error in the year on one of the Catherines I found. One was born in 1808. Her parents were Patrick Kehoe and Mary Rourke. We found a sister Bridget born in 1797 and a brother Edmund as opposed to Edward born in 1804. The address given in St. Mullins was Marley. We did not find a Thomas or John. You say Thomas was born around 1815. The dates in these records jump from end of 1814 straight to 1816.

Now the confusing bit. The other Catherine Kehoe born in 1804, also with an address as Marley. Her parents were Ned Kehoe and Mary Summers. We found a brother Thomas born in 1802.

To obtain full details of the baptisms above, each set (each family) will cost $20. If you think either could be your ancestors, please forward payment and the records will be forwared to you.

Regards

Mary Moore
