Notes
Birth recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 161). Marriage in Smithfield, RI. (VRs, p. 74), to Jemima Angell (1743-1828).
Married Jemima, daughter of Major John and Lydia (Windsor) Angell. After Seth's death she married (2) (pub. Aug. 17, 1789) Oct. 29, 1789, at Mendon, Charles Angell, of Smithfield RI. Seth lived at Chestnut Hill, in Mendon, now Blackstone, and his grave stone in the Chestnut Hill burying ground, bears the inscription, "In Memory of Mr. Seth Taft who died Dec. 9th 1781 in 43 year of his age." Seth's will dated Aug 19, 1780 and allowed Jan 7, 1782, names his wife and all of his children giving to the sons twice as much as to the daughters. Jemima was executrix.

Children of Seth Taft and Jemima Angell are:
57. i.   PRUDENCE5 TAFT, b. July 01, 1761, ?Mendon, Ma; d. 1853, ?Woodstock, Vt.

15. MARY4 TAFT (STEPHEN 3, BENJAMIN 2, ROBERT 1) was born July 24, 1742 in Uxbridge, Ma, and died Bef 1799 in ?Smithfield, RI. She married RUFUS SMITH 1763, son of Jacob Smith.

Notes
Birth recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 157). Marriage intentions 9 Jul. 1763 at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 306) with Rufus Smith (1740/1-1818) of Smithfield, RI.
A probable mis-identification of the wife of Rufus Smith (1741-?1826) of Smithfield, RI.
A query in the Boston Evening Transcript (11 Aug 1930: 499) indicated that Rufus Smith (Jacob4, Joseph3, Edward2, Christopher1), b. 17 Mar 1741, at Smithfield, RI., married Mary Sayles (Richard4, Richard3, John2, John1), b 18 Dec 1742, and that she died at Smithfield 27 Jan 1770. Children of this union are stated to have been Lavinia, b. 14 Dec 1763; Stephen, b. 6 May 1766 (m. Rhoda Harris); Jacob, b. 10 Oct 1767 (m. Elizabeth Mowry); Mary, b. 18 Dec 1769.
The birth of Rufus (and names of his parents, Jacob & Dinah) appear in records of Smithfield Friends (p. 197), as does a birth date for Mary, his wife, and the birth records of the four children last mentioned. Also given in these records is the date of death cited above for Mary, wife of Rufus. Civil vital records of Smithfield (p. 112) confirm a birth date of 13 Dec 1742 for Mary Sayles, daughter of Richard & Abigail.
The marriage of Rufus Smith and Mary Sayles in 1761 is given, without documentation, in Roger Williams of Providence (19, 1: 14) and this is cited in Sayles Country (1986). However, no such marriage is found in the published civil vital records of Rhode Island or the published records of Smithfield Friends. It may be noted that a marriage record for a Mary Sayles to Thomas Smith in 1772 is found in Smithfield vital records.
The vital records of Uxbridge, Mass. (p. 306) show the m. i. 9 Jul 1763, of Rufus Smith of Smithfield, RI., and Mary Taft. This Mary Taft wasb. 24 Jul 1742, at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 157), the daughter of Stephen3 Taft (Benjamin2, Robert1) and is clearly identified as a daughter of Stephen Taft and wife of Rufus Smith in the will of Stephen Taft of Uxbridge (1770, Worcester Co. #58077) as well as the will of Mary's brother, Benjamin Taft of Uxbridge (1770, Worcester Co. #57765). These wills dated 25 Jun 1770 and 10 Aug 1770, respectively, indicating that Mary was (known or thought to be) alive on those dates. Hence, the date of death of 27 Jan 1770 for Mary, wife of Rufus, makes no sense (despite the apparent cessation of children of Rufus and Mary after December, 1769, when Mary Taft would have been but 27 years old).
Not a single piece of primary evidence has been found to confirm a marriage between Rufus Smith and Mary Sayles, although there is ample evidence that he married Mary Taft. Conceivably, he could have married Mary Sayles who died shortly afterwards, leaving him free to remarry. Nor, does it seem likely that there were two contemporaneous Rufus Smiths of Smithfield. Rufus Smith of Glocester, RI., is relatively easy to distinguish and trace, so does not confound the present issue once recognized. Naming evidence, incidentally, is ambiguous as Mary Sayles is known to have had a brother, Stephen. Alas, Mary's father, Richard Sayles, who died in 1807, left no probate record.
The will of Rufus Smith of Smithfield, written in 1818 but proved in 1826, names wife Sarah, sons Stephen, Jacob and Dan, daughters Mary, Sarah Pain and Marcy Thayer.

Children of Mary Taft and Rufus Smith are:
65. i.   LAVINIA5 SMITH, b. December 14, 1763, Smithfield, RI; d. Bef 1818, ?Smithfield, RI.
ii.   STEPHEN SMITH, b. May 06, 1766, Smithfield, RI; d. Aft 1818; m. RHODA HARRIS.
iii.   JACOB SMITH, b. October 10, 1767, Smithfield, RI; d. Aft 1818; m. ELIZABETH MOWRY.
iv.   MARY SMITH, b. December 18, 1769, Smithfield, RI; d. Aft 1818.

16. SILAS4 TAFT (STEPHEN 3, BENJAMIN 2, ROBERT 1) was born June 10, 1744 in Uxbridge, Ma, and died August 07, 1812 in New York. He married ELIZABETH CRUFF December 04, 1768 in Smithfield, RI, daughter of Samuel Cruff and Abigail Sprague.

Notes
Birth recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 161). Marriage to Elizabeth Cruff (1750-1821) in Smithfield, RI. (VRs, p. 321).
Married Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Cruff, of Smithfield RI. Exactly where Silas lived and died is doubtful, but he probably settled in Connecticut. References given under Stephen, Silas's father, (49) identify Silas with the following from the Massachusetts Revolutionary rolls; "Taft, Silas. Private in Capt. Bezaleel Taft's (9th) Co. Col. Nathan Tyler's (3d Worcester Co.) regt. entered service July 28, 1780; discharged Aug 7, 1780: service 17 days, including travel (3 days) home; company marched to Tiverton, RI., on an alarm of July 27, 1780."
After the war Silas and his family fanned out over up-state NY, via western Massachusetts and even Connecticut. They seem to have moved frequently. A Silas was at Stillwater (Albany Co, now Saratoga Co) NY in the 1790 census in a household of 3 males 16 and upwards, 2 males under 16 and 3 females. Silas's son Asa was of Norway, NY in 1794 when he married Sarah Whitney at Peru, Mass. Silas's son Job and wife baptized several children at New Rhinebeck, NY between 1796-1808.
Silas has no obvious claim to fame, unless the prodigious number of his descendants confirms that distinction. It is not even known how he made his way in life -i.e., his occupation has not been discovered. In 1812, Silas died and was buried at the Lee Valley Cemetery, Lee (Oneida Co), NY, where his sons Dan and Cruff had settled. According to old family records, Elizabeth went with her daughter Abigail to Clarkson (Monroe Co), NY where she died and was buried at nearby Garland (Dana Spencer records). It may never be possible to reconstruct the movements of Silas and Elizabeth over their later years. It seems that they may well have been the revolving charges of their various children who were, themselves, in a "state of flux" during this period. No probate records have been found for Silas (Oneida Co., Otsego Co., Genesee Co.) or for Elizabeth (Genesee Co., Otsego Co.)
Elizabeth Cruff's ancestry is reasonably well known. Her descent from Richard Warren of the Mayflower is documented in Richard Warren (Mayflower Families in Progress) and an application based on this lineage has been verified by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Children of Silas Taft and Elizabeth Cruff are:
66. i.   DAN5 TAFT, b. May 06, 1769, Uxbridge, Ma; d. July 07, 1834, New York.
67. ii.   JOB TAFT, b. February 02, 1772, Uxbridge, Ma; d. August 15, 1840, New York.

viii.   MARY TAFT, b. April 01, 1786, Uxbridge, Ma.

17. SARAH4 TAFT (STEPHEN 3, BENJAMIN 2, ROBERT 1) was born February 11, 1747/48 in Uxbridge, Ma. She married THOMAS JOSLIN 1767 in Smithfield, RI.

Notes
The marriage intentions at Uxbridge call her Sarah Taft, but the Smithfield record reads Mrs. Sarah Taft. However, the probate of her father (Worcester Co. #58077) identifies her as Sarah Joslin, wife of Thomas. See the Jocelyn genealogy (1962). Birth recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 161). Marriage intentions 1 Feb. 1767 in Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 321), marriage at Smithfield, RI. (VRs, p. 44).

Children of Sarah Taft and Thomas Joslin are:
73. i.   ISRAEL5 JOSLIN, b. May 02, 1767, Smithfield, RI; d. May 29, 1828, Cumberland RI.
74. ii.   STEPHEN JOSLIN, b. September 13, 1769, Cumberland RI.
75. iii.   HANNAH JOSLIN, b. October 08, 1771, Cumberland RI.
76. iv.   RUFUS JOSLIN, b. January 07, 1774, Cumberland RI; d. June 22, 1827, Cumberland RI.
77. v.   LUCINA JOSLIN, b. February 12, 1778, Cumberland RI; d. Bef 1850, ?Cumberland, RI.

18. ESTHER4 TAFT (MIJAMIN 3, BENJAMIN 2, ROBERT 1) was born November 23, 1734 in Uxbridge, Ma.

Notes
Birth recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. (VR's p. 152). Her daughter Elizabeth apparently illegitimate. Both mother and daughter not traced after 1755. Uxbridge VRs show the birth of both.
In 1811, Esther's brother Nathaniel, purchased from each of his sisters, Sarah Buffum and Lydia Cass, 1/12 portions of a parcel of land "formerly the property of Mijamin Taft" at Douglas, Mass (Worcester County Deed Book 180: 638, 639). This may be taken to indicate that Mijamin was survived, in 1785 by 12 children (or their heirs) of the fourteen children Mijamin is known to have sired. Hence, it is quite possible that Esther ( or Elizabeth, her daughter) was one of the heirs.

       Child of Esther Taft is:
  i.   ELIZABETH5 TAFT, b. September 14, 1755, Uxbridge, Ma.

19. SARAH4 TAFT (MIJAMIN 3, BENJAMIN 2, ROBERT 1) was born September 22, 1736 in Uxbridge, Ma, and died December 17, 1814 in Richmond, NH. She married JEDEDIAH BUFFUM September 22, 1757 in Smithfield, RI.

Notes
Birth recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 161). See the History of Richmond, NH. (1884) and Buffum genealogy.

Children of Sarah Taft and Jedediah Buffum are:
78. i.   ESTHER5 BUFFUM, b. April 12, 1758, Smithfield, RI; d. Abt 1785.
79. ii.   GEORGE BUFFUM, b. May 13, 1760, Smithfield, RI; d. July 30, 1843, ?Richmond, NH.
80. iii.   ESEK BUFFUM, b. April 06, 1763, Smithfield, RI; d. December 01, 1831, ?Richmond, NH.
81. iv.   ROBERT BUFFUM, b. March 10, 1765, Richmond, NH; d. 1811, ?Richmond, NH.
82. v.   JEDIDAH BUFFUM, b. April 08, 1767, Richmond, NH; d. June 29, 1789, Richmond, NH.
83. vi.   SARAH BUFFUM, b. October 22, 1769, Richmond, NH; d. New York.
84. vii.   WILLIAM BUFFUM, b. June 04, 1772, Richmond, NH; d. December 09, 1859, ?Richmond, NH.
85. viii.   CANDACE BUFFUM, b. January 29, 1776, Richmond, NH; d. June 06, 1846, Richmond, NH.

20. NATHAN4 TAFT (MIJAMIN 3, BENJAMIN 2, ROBERT 1) was born December 11, 1738 in Uxbridge, Ma, and died March 14, 1817 in Uxbridge, Ma. He married (1) SARAH COOPER March 14, 1760 in Glocester, RI, daughter of Moses Cooper. He married (2) RUTH CRUFF Abt 1766.

Notes
Born at Uxbridge, Mass. ( VRs, p. 158). A Nathan Taft filed marriage intentions 22 Nov. 1758, at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs, p. 319), with Mary Cooper, of Glocester, RI. Was this a first marriage of Nathan4? Did Mary die without issue? Nathan did marry Sarah Cooper. The will of Sarah's father, Moses Cooper of Glocester, dated 11 Feb. 1802 (RI Reg. 7:108) mentions his daughter Sarah Taft and various grandchildren, including Moses Taft, Mijamin Taft and Mary Hews. In addition, a John Taft and Dorcas Whipple are noted as "children of my daughter, Sarah". Further, there is a reference to a grandchild, "Laben Thornton the natural son of my daughter, Sarah". It is difficult to account for these last three individuals, especially as there are some severe time constraints. It is not known when Nathan married Ruth Cruff (although that he did is established by the will of Samuel Cruff, Esq of Smithfield, dated 23 Apr 1776-RI Reg 12:34) but presumably it was before their first child Jesse, was born 12 Apr 1767. Hence the children John and Dorcas, by Sarah, have to be squeezed into the already crowded period between 1760 and 1766. Should it be assumed further, that Sarah's child Laben Thornton was an illegitimate son before Sarah married Nathan Taft?

Children of Nathan Taft and Sarah Cooper are:
86. i.   MIJAMIN5 TAFT, b. September 09, 1760, Glocester, RI.
87. ii.   MOSES TAFT, b. October 04, 1762, Glocester, RI; d. November 07, 1846, Bridgeton, RI.
88. iii.   MARY TAFT, b. Abt 1764, ?Rhode Island.
iv.   JOHN TAFT, b. Abt 1765; d. Aft 1802.
v.   DORCAS TAFT, b. Abt 1766; d. Aft 1802; m. ? WHIPPLE.

Children of Nathan Taft and Ruth Cruff are:
89. vi.   JESSE5 TAFT, b. April 12, 1767, Smithfield, RI; d. August 26, 1848, Burrillville, RI.
vii.   RICHARD TAFT, b. August 10, 1771, Smithfield, RI.
90. viii.   NATHAN TAFT, b. March 21, 1773, Uxbridge, Ma; d. 1846.
ix.   SARAH TAFT, b. September 19, 1775, Uxbridge, Ma; m. OTIS HUNT.
x.   SUSANNA TAFT, b. September 24, 1777, Uxbridge, Ma; d. September 29, 1833, Uxbridge, Ma; m. EZRA SOUTHWICK, 1814.
xi.   ABIGAIL TAFT, b. November 11, 1781, Uxbridge, Ma.
91. xii.   CHLOE TAFT, b. April 18, 1784, Uxbridge, Ma; d. November 04, 1812, Uxbridge, Ma.

21. MIJAMIN4 TAFT (MIJAMIN 3, BENJAMIN 2, ROBERT 1) was born June 13, 1740 in Uxbridge, Ma, and died June 23, 1817 in Uxbridge, Ma. He married (1) SARAH SMITH October 30, 1763 in Smithfield, RI, daughter of Jacob Smith and Dinah Harris. He married (2) MARY CLARK 1787. He married (3) HANNAH THAYER March 15, 1798 in Uxbridge, Ma.

Notes
Birth recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. (VRs. p. 158) death recorded same (VRs. p. 408). There is no proof that it was Mijamin4 who married Mary Clark. It is possible that this was a first marriage of Mijamin's nephew, Mijamin5, son of Nathan. The D.A.R Patriot Index (Centennial Edition) indicates that Mijamin4 m. 1) Sarah Smith and 2) Mary Clark. It does not mention a third, certain marriage to Hannah Thayer. Whatever the case, the Crandall genealogy (1949) erroneously states that Mijamin4 m. Susanna Robbins when, in fact, it was Mijamin4's father who married her. This error appears to have been engendered by having first mistaken the death of Sarah (Smith) Taft, 2 Jul. 1785, as the death of Sarah (Sweeting) Taft, wife of Mijamin3. In fact, Sarah Sweeting Taft must have died before 1779 as Mijamin3 m. Susanna Robbins that year.
Mijamin4 Taft left his widow Hannah, who petitioned to have Royal Taft appointed administrator ( Worcester Co. #57994). This was duly done and upon presentation of an account, it was ordered that Royal should pay the six oldest children of Mijamin for whom no later records have been discovered, four must have still been alive in 1817.

Children of Mijamin Taft and Sarah Smith are:
  i.   DEXTER5 TAFT, b. 1764.
ii.   PATIENCE TAFT, b. July 08, 1768, Uxbridge, Ma.
iii.   WAIT TAFT, b. November 30, 1771, Uxbridge, Ma.
iv.   HANNAH TAFT, b. April 16, 1773, Uxbridge, Ma.
v.   RUFUS TAFT, b. September 25, 1775, Uxbridge, Ma.
vi.   ELETHAN TAFT, b. June 16, 1777, Uxbridge, Ma.
92. vii.   ROYAL TAFT, b. November 08, 1779, Uxbridge, Ma; d. February 23, 1861, Uxbridge, Ma.
93. viii.   SMITH TAFT, b. March 22, 1784, Uxbridge, Ma; d. July 09, 1842, Charlton, Ma.

22. NATHANIEL4 TAFT (MIJAMIN 3, BENJAMIN 2, ROBERT 1) was born October 28, 1742 in Uxbridge, Ma, and died 1820 in NH. He married (1) HANNAH CASS February 04, 1768 in Smithfield, RI, daughter of Daniel Cass and Mary Cook. He married (2) PESSE RANDALL July 26, 1790 in Richmond, NH.

Notes
Birth recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. ( VR's p. 159). Died prob. at Richmond, NH. Marriage not in Smithfield VR's. Nathaniel was a Quaker. He settled early at Richmond, NH., and was among the voters at the first town meeting, 27 Mar. 1765.
