1. JOHN2 DOUGHTY (THOMAS 1) was born July 24, 1754, and died September 16, 1826 in Morris Co., NJ. He married ELIZABETH LAFEVER Abt. 1778 in Morris Co., NJ.

Notes for JOHN DOUGHTY:
Served as an adjutant under Col. James Ford, Jr., Morris Co. NJ Militia. Eastern Battalion in 1776; and as a captain of the artillery. He enlisted Jan. 13, 1776. Took part in the battle of Trenton and Princeton and a skirmish on Assunpink Creek; promoted 1777 to Captain, 2nd Regiment, Continental Corps of Artillery, and served throughout the war.
He was a graduate of King's College (Columbia); owned a large farm on Mt. Kemble Ave., Morristown, NJ.
He continued his military service after the war's end as a commander of a company of artillery and engineers, engaged in frontier service. As senior in rank, there being but one other comapny of artillery, he was commander of the American Army from June 20, to Aug. 12, 1784. He was then commissioned Major of artillery and was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in June of 1798.
While in the command of the army he built, in 1785, Fort Harmar, afterward the site of Marietta, OH. Going down the river he built in 1790 Fort Washington, on the site of the city of Cincinnati. This fort was comprised ot cabins of hewn logs, connected by palisades, also of logs. He resigned from the army on May 26, 1800.
