Notes for T
HOMAS EANES:
From: The Descendants of Edward Eanes of Henrico and Chesterfield Counties in Virginia, 1981, compiled by Richard Henry Eanes, Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 68-22265, Reprinted in 1981 by Geneva Eanes Knight and William Clayton Eanes

"Thomas Eanes and Bethany Dove married in Pittsylvania Co., VA., May 17, 1841 (bond). The parents of this couple are not named in this bond, but two Doves, Sirwood and William, signed for the bride. We find them in the Pittsylvania census for 1850, Thomas' age given as 27, and Bethany's as 30, his occupation, overseer. With them, besides their children, are living Martha Eanes age 78, Kitty Eanes, age 27, and Elizabeth Eanes age 35. The only other reference to Martha that has been found is in the Pittsylvania census for 1830. There she is listed as the head of a household with one male age between 5 and 10, one female less than 5, one between 5 and 10, one between 10 and 15, one between 20 and 30, one between 30 and 40, and one more than 70 years of age. Who the females are is not known, but Martha, having been left a widow between 1820 and 1830 could have had with her in 1830 the female relatives of herself or/and her deceased husband. The children less than 10 were certainly hers, born during the decade. In the 1820 census of Pittsylvania Co. we find an Eanes, but his Christian name cannot be read with certainty. His family consisted of one male, age between 15 and 26 (this is certainly himself) and two females, ages between 16 and 18. The age of Martha, as afterwards given, does not conform to either of these female ages, but we know that there was much carelessness or deception in giving ages to census takers. Then in the Pittsylvania census for 1840 we find a Thomas Eanes, head of a household, his family consisting of a male age between 20 and 30, two females between 20 and 30, and one female between 60 and 70. The male is certainly himself, the two younger females were perhaps sisters and were the younger females with Martha in 1830 and with him named in 1850. Again the age of the older female does not conform. In the 1860 census reports we find Thomas living in Halifax Co., VA., his age 41, with him are PARTHENA, age 40, and his children listed in 1850 plus those born after 1850, but no other persons. Thomas is again an overseer. No record of him has been found after 1860. At a meeting of the descendants of John Ferdinand Eanes in 1965, one of them named the brothers and sisters of John Ferdinand, and those names conformed to the names of the children of Thomas as named in the census reports of 1850 and 1860; so we accept Thomas as the only son of the Eanes of 1820 (whose Christian name cannot be read) and his wife Martha."
