ZARIAH EVANS:
From: Bates History of Greene Co., Pa. 1888 page 563

AZARIAH EVANS, farmer and stock-grower, was born in Washington County, Penn, August 29, 1828, and is a son of Caleb and Anna [Smalley] Evans. His father was a native of Fayette County, and his mother was born in Washington county. They were of Welsh extraction. His father, a farmer by occupation, came to Greene county in 1839, and in 1841 settled in Aleppo Township, where he died in 1860. He reared a family of fourteen children, twelve of whom grew to be men and women, and eight of the family are still alive and in active life. The subject of this sketch is next to the oldest of those now living and was reared on the home farm, receiving a common school education. Mr. Evans has spent his life as a farmer, having lived in Greene County since he was 13 years of age. He has been very successful, and owns at present a fine farm of 274 acres. He was united in marriage September 3, 1848, with Mary, daughter of William and Elizabeth [Courtwright] Griffith, who were of Irish origin. Mr. and Mrs. Evans have two children living---Elizabeth A., wife of William B. King, and Samuel L., a farmer and stock grower, who married Lucinda, daughter of James and Julianna [Chess] Parson. Mr. and Mrs. Evans have met with well deserved sucess. Both have been very hard workers and noted for their liberality. Mr. Evans' name often appears on the church subscription papers, and he has given liberally both to the church and Sabbath school. Though not a member of any church, he is ever anxious for the success of any church or moral enterprise. His wife is a member of the Church of God. Mr. Evans is a Republican. In 1862 he enlisted in Company A., Eithteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, and served until the close of the war, being discharged by general order. Among the engagements he took part was the famous battle of Gettysburg. He was at one time an active member of the Patrons of Husbandry.
