  Notes for JOHN HARVEY COURTWRIGHT:
            John H. Courtwright       Dec. 14, 1903

Again death has visited our community, and this time has called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Courtwright, of McCracken, Pa., and claimed for its victim their youngest child, John H. Courtwright, aged twenty years and four months. He was taken ill of pneumonia, in October, and was confined to his bed about a week, but he got better, and was well enough to walk out into the yard, and we thought sure that Johnnie would get well, but our hopes were blighted, for that dreadful disease, hasty consumption, conquered him, and he grew weaker day by day, until December 14, 1903, when death relieved him of his suffering.
Rev. J. M. Murray was with him on Saturday evening, and again on Sunday morning, and talked with him, and he answered Mr. Murray without the least of fear, and told him if the time had come he was not afraid to die. And he also told him that he often thought of the little prayer his mother taught him in childhood.
Johnnie was a kind and obedient boy, and will be sadly missed by his parents, brother, and sisters, but we should not weep for him, but think him better off, for his suffering is o'er. He leaves to mourn his death, father, mother, seven sisters and one brother, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Murray, at the Sugar Grove church, December 15, 1903. His remains were laid to rest in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

A few years later he closed out his interest in the general dry goods and grocery business and opened a hardware store and operated it many years, finally sold it out to his son H. R. Courtwright, who continued it for a number of years and closed out the hardware business and engaged in other business.
Mr. Courtwright did not in reality retire from active business, and at the time of his death he was interested in a number of business ventures. He was vice-president of the Mound City Bank, President of the Citizens Building and Loan Company and also President of the City and County Bank all of this city.
He was a public spirited man and favored all modern improvements of both the city and the county.
He was a life-long member of the Presbyterian church, and officially connected with the First Presbyterian church of this city for many years.
