Notes for Christopher Hinkle: Christopher " Christy " Hinkle a pioneer of Pultney Township, Belmont County, Ohio was born in Pennsylvania, April 15, 1777. He married Sarah Keyser, daughter of Andrew and Mary Palmer Keyser in Pennsylvania in 1798. Sarah was born in Pennsylvania January 24, 1780.
The birth of their first child Mary, in Jefferson County in 1799 ( before the formation of Belmont County ) I believe establishes their early pioneer presence in Belmont County. There are no early records of this Hinkle Family in Jefferson County so it is believed Mary was born on the homestead which, when Belmont County was formed from Jefferson County, fell within the boundary of Belmont County. The Hinkle homestead of 54 acres stayed in the family until the Great Depression When it was sold. The ruins of the Homestead still exist and the wonderful spring still run clear and strong. The location of Rt. 214 cuts through and filled in one of the Hinkle farm fields.
Christy was a miller, as well as a farmer, and served durning the War of 1812. The family was a lifelong member of The Reformed Presbyterian on Rt. 214. ( High Ridge United Presbyterian Church ) and when the congregation dissolved, many of todays descendents be came members of the St. Clairsville, United Presbyterian Church.
Christopher and Mary had nine children:
1) Mary married Alexander Giffen in 1822. 2) John married Elizabeth Wilson in 1825. 3) William married Sarah Giffen in 1825. 4) Christopher married Margaret Allen in 1829 5) Susannah married John Neff in 1832. 6) Sarah married Robert Giffen in 1825. 7) Peter first marriage was Louise Serichfield in 1833, they located in Iowa, his second marriage was to Martha Tanner. 8) Rebecca married Joseph Hamilton Galloway in 1849. 9) Margaret married Samuel Wise in 1837.
Sarah died February 9, 1850 and Christopher died April 1, 1861. Both are buried in the High Ridge Cemetery, Pultney Township, Belmont County, Ohio near the site of the original Reform Presbyterian Church.
